Men's Date Night Outfits: What to Wear to Dinner, a Bar, a Show or a First Date

The best men's date night outfits start from one formula: dark trousers or dark jeans, a fine knit or a shirt worn open at the collar, a soft jacket, and leather shoes you can walk in. Then adjust it for the setting. Emily Post's attire guide calls dressy casual the ideal choice for dinner at a nice restaurant: a sport coat or blazer with trousers, and a dress shirt, button-down, open collar or polo, the tie optional. A cocktail bar suits a dark knit polo and suede. A gallery or a show calls for layers you can shed, a casual first date for dark denim and a good sweater, and a January night for a coat that fits over all of it. Below, each setting with outfit formulas, the fit and fabric details that make an outfit look considered, and the pieces to shop.

Men's date night outfits by setting, at a glance

Most dates happen in one of six places. Where the table uses a dress-code term, it follows Emily Post's definitions; the outfits are our editors' picks within them.

SettingWhat it asks forThe outfitShoes
Dinner at a good restaurantDressy casual: a seasonal sport coat or blazer with slacks; a dress shirt, casual button-down, open collar or polo; tie optionalA soft navy, brown or plum jacket, a fine roll-neck or an open-collar shirt, charcoal flannel trousersSuede loafers

A gallery, a play or a concertLayers that come off; quiet shoesAn overshirt over a fine roll-neck, straight dark trousersSuede loafers or clean leather sneakers

A winter dateWhatever the venue asks, plus a coat that covers itAn overcoat or car coat over the jacket, flannel trousers, a scarfChelsea boots on a rubber sole

One rule covers the gaps: dress for the most formal part of the evening. If dinner comes before drinks, dress for dinner. A jacket can come off at the bar; you cannot add one you left at home.

Dinner at a restaurant: wear a soft jacket

Emily Post's guide calls dressy casual the ideal choice for dinner at a nice restaurant, and for men it means a seasonal sport coat or blazer with slacks, and a dress shirt, casual button-down, open collar or polo, with the tie optional. "Seasonal" is the useful word in January. Choose cloth with some weight and texture, such as flannel, a wool and cashmere herringbone, corduroy or suede: across a table in low light it looks warmer and softer than a smooth worsted, which belongs to the office.

Look for a soft jacket rather than a stiff one: a natural shoulder with little padding, patch pockets and a light lining. It moves when you sit and lean in, and it keeps the look closer to a sweater than to a suit. Canali cuts soft jackets in herringbone and in suede, and Gabriela Hearst works in cashmere, down to cashmere corduroy. Navy, charcoal and brown are the safe colors. Deep plum and bottle green are the two colors that look deliberate at dinner rather than like a costume, as long as everything else stays quiet.

Some restaurants still set a dress code, so read the reservation page before you go. The River Café, beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, requires jackets and collared shirts for men, prefers ties, and does not allow casual jeans, athletic wear or sandals. For a room like that, wear the jacket with a collared shirt and carry a knit tie in your pocket.

Fit matters more than the label, and the shoulders decide it. The shoulder seam should end just past the bone of your shoulder. A tailor can shorten sleeves and take in a waist, but a jacket that is too wide across the shoulders is close to impossible to fix, a point Gentleman's Gazette's fit guide also makes, along with the traditional rule that the jacket covers your seat. So buy for the shoulders and alter the rest. Italian houses size jackets by the chest: the number is roughly half the measurement in centimeters, which puts it ten above the US size, and Canali's size guide lists an Italian 50 as a US 40. With a shirt, let a little cuff show at the wrist; with a knit underneath, end the sleeve at the wrist bone so the sweater cuff does not bunch.

Three dinner formulas

  • The classic: navy double-breasted jacket, white shirt open at the collar, mid-gray flannel trousers, dark brown suede loafers.
  • The warmer one: plum or bottle-green corduroy jacket, cream roll-neck, charcoal trousers, black suede loafers.
  • The softest: brown suede jacket, navy knit polo, dark rinse jeans, taupe suede Chelsea boots. Suede makes dark jeans look deliberate at a restaurant without a dress code.

Drinks at a cocktail bar: dark knits and texture

A bar is darker and louder than a dining room, and it is where you are most likely to stand. Go one step down from dinner: lose the jacket or swap it for an overshirt, and let a long-sleeved knit polo do the work of a shirt. The collar frames the face the way a shirt collar does, the knit has none of a dress shirt's stiffness, and it does not crease when you lean on the bar.

Choose the yarn for the room. Cashmere and silk blends have a low sheen that catches bar light; fine merino and wool are matte and a little sportier; heavy cashmere is the warmest but looks bulky under a jacket. Keep the colors dark and saturated: black, navy, charcoal, deep burgundy. The knit should skim rather than cling and end at your belt. Leave only the top button of the placket open, and skip the tie: a knit collar is made to be worn without one.

Three bar formulas

  • Black cashmere-silk polo, black straight jeans, black suede Chelsea boots.
  • Burgundy knit polo, charcoal flannel trousers, dark brown suede loafers.
  • Navy polo under a camel corduroy overshirt worn open, dark indigo jeans, brown loafers.

Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli are the houses to know for fine knits, and our guide to the best men's cashmere sweaters explains how to judge the yarn itself.

A gallery, a play or a concert: layers that come off

Galleries, theaters and concert halls are warm inside and cold outside, you stand or walk for part of the night and sit still for the rest, and there is often a line at the coat check afterward. Dress in layers that come off without fuss. An overshirt, cut like a shirt in the weight of a light jacket, is the easiest top layer: worn open over a fine roll-neck or a crewneck, it looks finished, and it folds over the back of a seat without the structured shoulders and lapels that make a tailored jacket crumple after two hours of sitting.

Wool and cashmere overshirts are the dressiest, corduroy the warmest-looking, and cotton twill the most relaxed. Zegna and Jil Sander make theirs in fine wool with the clean lines of their tailoring. Keep everything else quiet: straight dark trousers or jeans, and shoes with rubber or crepe soles that do not clatter across a gallery floor.

Three formulas for a show

  • Navy wool overshirt, gray roll-neck, dark straight jeans, navy suede loafers.
  • Black cashmere overshirt, black roll-neck, charcoal trousers, black leather Chelsea boots.
  • Dark brown corduroy overshirt, cream crewneck, dark indigo jeans, brown suede Chelsea boots.

A casual first date: dark denim and a good knit

A first date over coffee, a walk or an early drink is casual, but casual is still a dress code. Emily Post's casual list for men, which includes khakis or good jeans that are clean and without holes, a polo, turtleneck or sweater, and loafers or sneakers, is a sound minimum. We would add one piece with texture, such as a suede or corduroy jacket, so the outfit looks chosen rather than grabbed.

The jeans decide it. Choose a dark rinse with no fading or distressing, in a straight or slim leg that follows the leg without gripping it. Hem them so they fall with a slight break or none: jeans that pool over sneakers look careless, and with loafers the hem should just touch the top of the shoe. Selvedge denim, woven with a finished edge, can be turned up once to show it. Wear them with a merino or cashmere crewneck or polo, and clean leather sneakers or loafers.

Three first-date formulas

  • Dark indigo jeans, gray cashmere crewneck, brown suede jacket, white leather sneakers.
  • Black jeans, black knit polo, camel overshirt, black loafers.
  • Rinse selvedge jeans turned up once, navy roll-neck, brown suede Chelsea boots.

A winter date: dress for the walk between places

In January, the coldest part of a date is often the walk from the restaurant to the bar. By the National Weather Service's wind chill formula, a 30°F evening with a 15 mph wind feels like about 19°F on exposed skin. Plan the outfit around the coat, not the other way around.

  • Buy the coat to go over the jacket. Try it on over the blazer you plan to wear: the coat should cover the jacket completely, its sleeves should hide the jacket cuffs, and you should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling tight.
  • Choose the length for the evening. A knee-length overcoat covers tailoring; a car coat, which stops around mid-thigh, is easier to sit in and suits jeans; a toggled duffle coat is the most casual of the three.
  • Warm the layers underneath. Flannel trousers are warmer than smooth worsted, and a roll-neck under the jacket does a scarf's job once you are indoors.
  • Mind the soles. On icy or salted sidewalks, a rubber sole with a lug or studded tread grips better than leather. Suede Chelsea boots are fine in dry cold; on a wet night choose smooth leather, or protect the suede before you go.

Three winter formulas

  • Charcoal flannel overcoat over a navy jacket, cream roll-neck, gray flannel trousers, dark brown Chelsea boots on a lug sole.
  • Navy car coat, burgundy knit polo, dark jeans, brown suede Chelsea boots.
  • Navy duffle coat, gray crewneck, dark indigo jeans, brown boots.

Shoes: suede loafers or Chelsea boots

Two shoes cover almost every date. Suede loafers go with trousers and tailoring, and suede looks softer than polished leather in low light. Chelsea boots go with jeans and trousers alike, slip on and off easily, and, on a rubber or lug sole, handle a wet sidewalk. Wear socks that match your trousers rather than your shoes, and keep the finish matte: patent leather belongs with a tuxedo, which our guide to men's holiday party outfits covers.

John Lobb and Brioni make classic suede loafers, Tod's makes suede loafers on rubber soles that cope with a wet street, and Saint Laurent's slim Chelsea boots sit on a stacked heel. Check the size system on each listing before you order, because it varies by house and by retailer: English makers such as John Lobb size in UK numbers, which usually run half a size to a full size below US sizes; many Italian and French houses use European sizes; and some listings convert to US sizes. When a house publishes its own conversion chart, trust it over a generic one. Browse more in men's loafers.

Fit and fabric: the details that show up close

  • Collars. An open shirt collar should stand up under a jacket lapel rather than collapse; a button-down or a semi-spread collar does this best. Undo one button, not two.
  • Trousers. Wear them at the waist, with a slight break or none, and a dark sock that continues the line of the leg.
  • Knitwear. Fine-gauge knits sit under a jacket; chunky ones replace it. A sweater should end at the belt, with cuffs that stop at the wrist.
  • Texture over shine. Flannel, cashmere, corduroy and suede look richer in candlelight than smooth, shiny cloth, which reads as office wear or black tie.
  • One color at a time. Build on navy, charcoal, brown, cream and black, and let one piece carry color: a burgundy knit, a plum jacket, a bottle-green overshirt.
  • Small logos, or none. The more the label shows, the more the outfit is about the label.

Dinner and date night is the third most common occasion people bring to our AI stylist, after everyday dressing and parties, counting the people who asked in the twelve months to September 2026. How we chose

We checked each dress-code definition against Emily Post's attire guide and the restaurant example against the restaurant's own website, then chose pieces that suit each setting: soft jackets in textured winter cloth, long-sleeved knits fine enough to wear under a jacket, overshirts in wool, cashmere and corduroy, dark jeans with no distressing, coats long enough to cover tailoring, and suede shoes with soles to match the season. Every piece comes from a top luxury house, from Zegna and Brunello Cucinelli to Tom Ford and Saint Laurent, and was in stock in more than one size when we checked. We looked at every product photograph to confirm color and cut, and left out listings whose photographs did not match their stated color.

Frequently asked questions

What should a man wear on a first date?

Dark jeans or chinos with no fading, a fine knit or an open-collar shirt, a jacket with some texture, and clean leather sneakers or loafers. Match the venue: add a blazer for a good restaurant, and leave it at home for coffee or a walk.

Is a blazer too much for a date?

Not for dinner. Emily Post calls dressy casual, a sport coat or blazer with slacks, the ideal choice for dinner at a nice restaurant. Choose a soft jacket in flannel, corduroy or suede and wear it with an open collar or a knit, and it will look relaxed rather than corporate.

Can you wear jeans on a dinner date?

At most restaurants, yes: dark, clean jeans with a jacket and leather shoes are smart enough. Check the restaurant's dress code first; some, like the River Café in Brooklyn, do not allow casual jeans.

What does smart casual mean for a date?

Emily Post's attire guide does not define smart casual, and in practice it sits between its casual and dressy casual codes: tailored trousers or dark jeans, a knit polo, roll-neck or open-collar shirt, a jacket or overshirt, and leather shoes or very clean leather sneakers. No tie, and nothing athletic.

What colors should a man wear on a date?

Dark neutrals such as navy, charcoal, brown and black, with one richer color, such as burgundy, bottle green or plum, in a knit or a jacket. Save pale colors for daytime dates.

What shoes should a man wear on a date night?

Suede loafers with trousers, and Chelsea boots with jeans or trousers. In winter, choose a rubber or lug sole for grip, and save patent leather for black tie.
