The Best Designer Sneakers for Men: Court, Suede, Runner and High-Top

One pair does most of the work: a white leather court sneaker, leather-lined and plain, which goes with jeans, chinos, knitwear and an unstructured suit. The best designer sneakers for men build from there: add a suede trainer for texture and softer tailoring, a runner if you spend long days on your feet, and a leather or suede high-top for the colder months. How a sneaker is built matters as much as the name on the heel, because construction decides how long a pair lasts and whether it can be resoled. Below, we explain the four silhouettes and pick the luxury sneakers worth buying in each, then cover how they are made, how UK, US and European sizes compare, how to wear sneakers with tailoring and how to look after leather and suede.
The best designer sneakers for men, by silhouette
| Silhouette | How to spot it | Wear it with | How dressed up |
|---|---|---|---|
| White leather court sneaker | Low, clean leather upper on a flat rubber sole, little branding | Jeans, chinos, unstructured suits, knitwear | The smartest sneaker you can own |
| Suede trainer | Low and soft, often on a honey-colored gum sole | Denim, flannel, corduroy, knitwear | Smart casual |
| Runner | Padded collar, shaped cushioned sole, often mixed materials | Jeans, travel clothes, weekend knits | Casual |
| High-top | Covers the ankle bone, in leather or suede | Heavier denim, knitwear, overcoats | Casual, best in cold weather |
If you buy one pair, make it the white leather sneaker. If you buy two, add suede in tan, grey or navy. A runner earns its place if you walk a lot or travel often, and a high-top if your winters are cold. For women, see our guide to the best white sneakers.
Men's white designer sneakers: the court shape
A white court sneaker works because it is almost nothing: a low leather upper, a flat sole and laces. The differences are in the details. A leather lining is smoother against the foot and holds its shape; an almond toe looks slimmer and smarter than a round one; and the less branding, the more places the shoe can go. A colored band or heel tab adds interest and moves the pair a step toward the weekend.
Saint Laurent's leather court sneakers come in optic white with an almond toe, a leather lining and a spare set of laces. Prada's court sneaker sits on a thicker rubber sole with a removable insole, Valentino Garavani runs a navy leather band across the side of its white sneaker, and Maison Margiela pairs white leather with light grey suede on a gum sole. Kiton sets a plain leather upper on a contrasting sole, and Ferragamo keeps its white cowhide sneaker tonal, with a padded collar.
- Weekend: white court sneakers, dark indigo jeans with a single turn-up, a grey sweatshirt and a navy overshirt.
- Smart casual: white sneakers, stone chinos, a navy polo and a camel unstructured blazer.
- Travel: white sneakers, black trousers, a black crewneck and a charcoal overcoat.

Suede sneakers for men
Suede sneakers are softer and warmer-looking than white leather, and they sit better with the heavier fabrics of fall and winter: flannel, corduroy, cashmere and raw denim. Tan and taupe go with navy, grey and brown; grey suede suits black and charcoal; navy suede is the most discreet with tailoring. Suede marks in rain and needs brushing, so keep it for dry days.
Zegna's suede sneakers sit on a honey-toned natural rubber sole with a removable insole. Brunello Cucinelli bases its suede pair on a skater low-top, made in the house's workshop in Solomeo, and Brioni and Tod's line their suede sneakers in leather. Jil Sander's grey suede pair is the most minimal, and Canali's has a streamlined profile that sits well under tailored trousers.
- Winter weekend: tan suede sneakers, raw denim, a cream cable-knit and a navy peacoat.
- Soft tailoring: navy suede sneakers, grey flannel trousers, a navy cashmere crewneck and a camel coat.
- Tonal: grey suede sneakers, charcoal chinos, a grey rollneck and a black overcoat.

Runners: the most comfortable designer sneakers for men
If comfort decides, buy a runner. The padded collar holds the heel, the sole is shaped and cushioned where a court sneaker's is flat, and a removable insole, which several pairs here have, leaves room for an orthotic. Look for a leather lining if you wear them without socks, and choose nubuck, suede or a leather upper over mesh if you want the pair to look at home with tailoring. John Lobb, a house best known for its formal shoes and boots, makes a nubuck runner with contrast stitching, sized in UK numbers. Brunello Cucinelli's nubuck-and-suede runner has a leather lining and a detachable insole, Berluti mixes textile and smooth calf leather, and Loro Piana's walking sneaker has a wool and calf leather upper. Alexander McQueen's leather runner sits on a chunky sole with a padded collar, and Loewe's leather runner is trimmed in suede and lined in leather.
- Long walking day: brown nubuck runners, dark straight jeans, a white oxford shirt and a navy quilted jacket.
- Airport: grey knit runners, navy wool trousers, a grey hoodie under a navy overcoat.
- Monochrome: black leather runners, black jeans, a black rollneck and a charcoal coat.

High-top sneakers for colder months
A high-top covers the ankle bone, which makes it warmer and more substantial than a low-top and better balanced under heavy denim, cargo trousers and long coats. Let the trouser hem sit on top of the shoe or stop just above it; tucking trousers in looks costume-like. Leather high-tops are the easier care; suede looks softer but wants dry weather. Prada's white leather high-top sits on the same thick rubber sole as its court sneaker, Maison Margiela's closes with a hook-and-loop strap at the ankle over hidden laces, and Zegna's suede high-top closes with an elasticated strap. Christian Louboutin makes a charcoal suede version, and Givenchy's black leather high-top is picked out in red.
- Cold commute: dark brown suede high-tops, heavy straight jeans, a charcoal wool overcoat and a grey scarf.
- Weekend in the city: white leather high-tops, black jeans, a white T-shirt and a black leather jacket.

How designer sneakers are built: cupsole or vulcanized
In its guide to the quality tiers of casual flat sneakers, the menswear publication Heddels sorts flat-soled sneakers into two constructions. The descriptions below are Heddels'; the buying advice after them is ours.
- Vulcanized: Heddels describes a vulcanized rubber sole fused to the upper with heat and glue, the method behind canvas classics such as Vans and Converse, and notes that the bond eventually decays, so the sole starts to come away.
- Cupsole: in Heddels' definition, a rubber sole with a raised sidewall that cradles the upper like a cup, with the sidewall stitched to the upper as well as glued. Heddels says cup-soled sneakers typically last longer than vulcanized ones because stitching is stronger than glue in most cases.
To check a pair, look along the edge of the sole for real thread, not a molded pattern, running through the rubber wall. Not every thick rubber sole is stitched, so our rule of thumb is simple: if you cannot see stitching on the sidewall, assume the sole is held by glue alone. Heddels adds that whether a cupsole can be resoled depends on the quality of the upper and the construction, and advises checking with the maker when a listing does not say. Beyond the sole, check the lining (leather is smoother against a bare foot and holds its shape better than fabric), whether the insole comes out, and where the pair was made: most of the sneakers in this guide are made in Italy.
Sizing: UK, US and European sizes compared
Men's designer sneakers are sold in three size systems, and one house may use a different system from the next. Thom Browne's FAQ, for example, says the house sizes men's shoes in US numbers, while the English shoemaker Tricker's sizes in UK numbers, and many Italian houses use European ones. Between them, the listings in this guide use all three. On the listings that carry two labels, a UK size is one below the US size and a European size is 33 above it, and Tricker's fit guide gives the same equivalence for its standard sizing: a UK 8 is a European 42 and a US 9. The table follows those labels.
| US | UK | European |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 40 |
| 8 | 7 | 41 |
| 9 | 8 | 42 |
| 10 | 9 | 43 |
| 11 | 10 | 44 |
| 12 | 11 | 45 |
- Treat a conversion as a starting point. Every house cuts on its own last, so read the listing's fit note: one pair in this guide is described as fitting true to size, and a note may equally tell you to go up or down.
- Width: a standard width is a D in US sizing and an F in UK sizing, and a wide fit is an E in the US and a G in the UK, according to Tricker's. Several listings here show the D next to the US size.
- Between sizes? Leather and suede give a little with wear, so try the smaller size first; if it pinches across the toes, take the larger one with a thin insole rather than a pair that hurts.
- Try them with the socks you will wear, ideally later in the day, and leave a little room in front of the longest toe with no slip at the heel.
How to wear designer sneakers with a suit
Sneakers work with tailoring when the suit is relaxed enough to meet them. Choose an unstructured or soft-shouldered jacket in cotton, linen, flannel or a textured wool, skip the tie, and keep the sneaker clean and simple. A sharp business suit in fine worsted with a white leather sneaker looks like a mistake; the same sneaker with a navy cotton suit looks deliberate.
- Trousers: a narrow to moderate leg with no break or a slight break, so the hem meets the top of the shoe. Fabric that pools over a flat sole looks sloppy.
- Top half: a white T-shirt, a knitted polo, a fine crewneck or rollneck, or an oxford shirt worn open at the neck.
- Color: white leather with navy and grey; tan or brown suede with brown, olive and cream; black leather runners with black and charcoal.
- Socks: no-show socks with cropped trousers; otherwise fine socks that match the trousers, not the shoes.
- Limits: sneakers suit smart casual offices, dinners and travel days, not formal business meetings, weddings or black tie.
Three ways to wear it:
- Navy suit: an unstructured navy cotton suit, a white T-shirt, white leather court sneakers and no-show socks.
- Flannel: grey flannel trousers, a navy cashmere crewneck, a camel coat and tan suede sneakers; our guide to men's cashmere sweaters covers the knit.
- Evening: black trousers, a black rollneck, a charcoal overcoat and black leather sneakers; see our men's date night outfits for more.

How to care for luxury sneakers
Thom Browne's product-care page sets out how the house looks after its own footwear. We give its recommendations below, marked as the house's, with our own advice alongside; the care card that comes with your pair comes first.
- Grained leather: Thom Browne's advice for its own grained-leather shoes is to wipe surface marks with a soft, damp cloth and, when the leather is dry, to polish it with a high-quality colorless cream in circular strokes. We would not put household cleaners or solvents on a leather upper, and the house's notes for its leather goods explain the risk: solvents and chemicals can remove the natural oils in the leather.
- Suede and nubuck: Thom Browne recommends brushing them with a soft shoe brush to keep their velvety texture and keeping them away from moisture; if they get wet, blot the area as soon as possible while brushing.
- Fabric and mixed materials: Thom Browne says its fabric shoes, and shoes that combine materials, must never be soaked or put in a washing machine, because the colors can migrate and the sole can detach.
- Rubber soles: wipe the sidewalls with mild soap and water, keeping the water off suede.
- Storage: Thom Browne recommends felt bags for its footwear, because long-term storage in boxes without airflow may stiffen or crack the materials. Rotate pairs so linings dry between wears, and use shoe trees or tissue to keep the shape.
- Repairs: when the sole wears thin on a stitched cupsole, ask the house or a good cobbler about resoling before replacing the pair. For delicate leathers, Thom Browne recommends a professional leather shop or cobbler.
How we chose
All of these pairs come from houses on Vêtir's luxury list, and each one was new, in stock and offered in US men's sizes when we built the edit; none of them is pre-owned. We favored leather or suede uppers, leather linings where the listing states them, sole construction and materials that the house or retailer describes, and wide size runs, and we covered the four silhouettes a man actually wears, from the white court sneaker to the high-top, across houses and price points. When a pair sells out, its edit refills with the closest match in the same style and price band. Browse all our men's low-top sneakers and high-tops for more.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best designer sneakers for men?
Start with a white leather court sneaker from a house such as Saint Laurent, Prada, Valentino Garavani or Maison Margiela, then add a suede trainer from Zegna, Brunello Cucinelli or Tod's. Choose a runner, from John Lobb or Loro Piana for example, if comfort comes first.
Can you wear sneakers with a suit?
Yes, with an unstructured suit in cotton, linen or flannel, no tie, and trousers with little or no break. Choose clean white leather or suede sneakers, and skip them for formal business meetings, weddings and black tie.
What is the difference between a cupsole and a vulcanized sneaker?
According to Heddels, a vulcanized sole is fused to the upper with heat and glue, and that bond eventually breaks down. A cupsole has a raised rubber sidewall that is stitched to the upper as well as glued, which usually makes it last longer and, on a well-made pair, can allow a resole.
How do UK, US and European men's shoe sizes compare?
On the dual-labeled listings in this guide, a UK size is one below the US size, and Tricker's gives a UK 8 as a European 42 and a US 9. Houses cut on different lasts, so use the conversion as a starting point and read the listing's fit note.
How do you clean suede sneakers?
Brush them often with a soft shoe brush, keep them away from water, and if they get wet, blot them straight away while brushing, which is what Thom Browne recommends for its own suede and nubuck. Take stains to a professional rather than scrubbing at home.
How many pairs of designer sneakers does a man need?
Two cover most wardrobes: a white leather court sneaker and a suede trainer. Add a runner for travel and long walking days, or a high-top if your winters are cold.
