Winter Outfit Ideas: 21 Complete Looks, Sorted by the Temperature Outside

The best winter outfit ideas start with one number: the coldest temperature you will stand in once the wind is counted. At 40 to 50°F, a wool coat over one fine knit is enough. From 32 to 40°F the problem is wet, so soles and the outer layer matter more than thickness. From 20 to 32°F you need three layers and a lined boot. Below 20°F, buy length, a hood and something to pull over your face. Every outfit here uses the same five pieces, a coat, a knit, a bottom, boots and a bag; only their weight changes.
Below: how to read a winter forecast, the layering rules, 21 complete cold-weather outfits for women in four temperature bands, and the pieces that make them work. Every color pairing follows our stylists' house rules.
Winter outfit ideas by temperature: the four bands
What to wear in winter comes down to your band. This is our stylists' working guide, not a safety standard: if you run cold, or will stand still for a long time, dress one band colder.
| Band | Coat | Under the coat | Legs and feet | Add |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 to 50°F | Wool or cashmere, hip to knee length | One fine knit, or a knit dress | Trousers, jeans or tights; leather boots | A scarf on windy days |
| 32 to 40°F, wet | Dense wool to the knee, or down under a water-repellent shell | A thin base layer and a knit | Hems that cover the boot shaft; leather on a rubber or lug sole | Gloves |
| 20 to 32°F, hard cold | Camel hair, alpaca, shearling or down | Silk or merino next to the skin, then a heavier knit | Silk or merino leggings under wool; shearling-lined boots | Hat, gloves, a scarf over the mouth |
| Below 20°F | Hooded down that covers the seat or more | Base layer, knit, and a second knit if you will stand still | A thermal layer under trousers; lined boots, wool socks | Mittens and a face covering |
Read the wind before you pick the band
The National Weather Service defines wind chill only for temperatures of 50°F or colder with wind above 3 mph, exactly where this guide begins, and its chart shows how fast wind moves you down the table: 35°F with a 20 mph wind feels like 24°F, 30°F with a 15 mph wind like 19°F, and 20°F with a 20 mph wind like 4°F (National Weather Service wind chill chart). Our rule of thumb follows: a steady 15 mph wind costs about one band.
Then consider where you will spend the holidays. In Central Park, the 1991 to 2020 normal high is 50°F on Thanksgiving Day and 42°F on Christmas Day (National Weather Service, Central Park daily normals), so New York's holiday afternoons sit in the top two bands. At Chicago O'Hare, Christmas Day's normals are a high of 34.2°F and a low of 22.2°F (National Weather Service, Chicago normals): a Chicago Christmas starts in the wet band and ends the day in hard cold, and January runs colder still. Dress for the coldest hour you will spend outdoors, usually the walk home.
Layered winter outfits: the logic behind every look
The National Weather Service advises several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one heavy layer, with outer garments that are tightly woven and water repellent (National Weather Service, Topeka). A well-dressed winter outfit is built the same way. Our stylists' five rules:
- Close the gaps before you add bulk. Warmth leaks at the neck, wrists, the small of the back and the inch between hem and boot. A turtleneck, a knit long enough to tuck and a hem that covers the boot shaft beat a thicker sweater.
- Thin at the skin, warm in the middle, windproof outside. Silk or fine merino adds warmth without width, the knit insulates, the coat stops wind and wet. In our experience an outfit fails when one piece is asked to do all three.
- Each layer slightly looser than the one beneath. Button the coat over the knit you will wear and bend both elbows. If the knit's cuffs climb past the coat's, or the shoulders strain, change one of them.
- Warm the legs too. Below freezing, silk or merino leggings under trousers, or opaque wool tights under a skirt, change how an outfit feels more than a second sweater, in our stylists' experience.
- Stay dry. Around freezing, slush chills you faster than the air. Smooth leather and rubber soles are for wet days; suede, pale shearling and brushed cashmere for dry ones.
In the twelve months to September 26, 2026, 14 accounts asked our AI stylist about cold or chilly weather and 12 gave it a temperature. Do the same: tell it the forecast and the plan for the day, and ask our AI stylist to build the outfit around pieces in your closet.
Four color palettes our stylists rely on
Vêtir's stylists keep brown and camel away from navy, blue denim and black. These palettes respect that rule and cover every outfit below.
- Camel, cream and chocolate. Camel or brown coats, ivory knits, ecru jeans, brown or cognac boots. No black, no blue.
- Black, gray and white, plus one red. Black boots and bags anchor it; burgundy or crimson is the accent.
- Navy and gray, with burgundy or black. Navy knits and corduroy, gray coats, black or burgundy leather.
- Blue jeans. With black, gray, white, ivory, red or navy, and black or white boots.
Winter outfits for 40 to 50°F: one coat, one fine knit
This is November and early December in much of the Northeast. A wool or cashmere coat to the hip or knee does the work over one fine knit or a knit dress; leave the down at home, or you will carry it by lunch.
- The gallery afternoon (45°F). Dolce & Gabbana's charcoal tweed bustier midi over Fendi's black cashmere crewneck, sheer black tights, Aquazzura's black Cotswold knee boots, Jil Sander's open-front black wool coat, a small black bag. The coat comes off indoors, so the dress is the outfit; a fine crewneck gives a strapped dress sleeves without a cardigan.
- Saturday coffee and the market (48°F). Max Mara's double-breasted cashmere trench in a deep red-brown, Isabel Marant's Grace cashmere top in ecru with red raglan sleeves, the same house's ecru Lisha jeans, Miu Miu's cognac lace-up boots on a rubber sole, TOTEME's taupe suede Mercer tote. Ecru denim is the jean that lets a brown coat and brown boots share an outfit, and the red sleeves pick up the red in the coat.
- Thanksgiving lunch (Thursday, November 26, around 50°F). ALAÏA's sleeveless asymmetric pleated wool midi in deep burgundy, with Max Mara's camel cashmere crewneck underneath, nude tights, Dolce & Gabbana's dark brown Velata riding boots on a lug sole, Max Mara's dark gray Alicia coat with its attached scarf, Prada's dark brown Bonnie bag. A kitchen with the oven on runs warm; the scarf covers your neck for the drive home.
- The travel day (45°F at both ends). Gabriela Hearst's navy Costa turtleneck in cashmere and silk, The Row's navy corduroy trousers, Prada's gray mohair-and-wool coat with three-quarter sleeves and long leather gloves, Tod's black pull-on boots, Victoria Beckham's black Sloane Frame tote, which snaps shut and, per its listing, takes a tablet. One knit, nothing to wrestle with in a seat, boots that slip off at security.
- Lunch that turns into drinks (42°F). Valentino's ivory double-wool cape with gold V pockets, Jil Sander's powder-blue wool-and-cashmere crewneck, Tom Ford's black wool bootcut trousers, Tod's black 80mm Chelsea boots, Miu Miu's burgundy Aventure bag, gloves through the arm slits. The bootcut covers the boot, so the leg reads unbroken; a cape rides badly under a shoulder strap, so carry the bag by its top handle; and pale wool keeps black from looking severe in daylight.
Wool and cashmere coats for 40 to 50°F
The knit under these coats should be fine enough for the coat sleeve to slide over it: cashmere, cashmere and silk, or fine merino. Gabriela Hearst's Costa is 70 percent cashmere and 30 percent silk, and Victoria Beckham's Georgia is 100 percent merino, according to their listings. Our guide to the best cashmere sweaters explains how to judge one, or browse our sweater shop.

Winter outfits for 32 to 40°F: wet cold, where the soles matter most
Around freezing, the weather is more often wet than bitter: rain turning to sleet, slush at every crossing, salt on the sidewalks. Choose a coat that sheds water, dense wool or down under a nylon shell, and boots on a rubber or lug sole. Hem trousers to cover the boot shaft, and switch to opaque tights under skirts.
- The sleet commute (34°F). Moncler's black Suyenne hooded down jacket, whose nylon its listing calls water-repellent, Victoria Beckham's gray merino mock neck, TOTEME's charcoal flannel trousers, Roger Vivier's black Viv' Chelsea boots on a rubber sole, Balenciaga's black Le City with its zipped top. A hood beats an umbrella in wind; a zip keeps sleet off your laptop.
- Holiday shopping on foot (36°F outside, warm in the stores). Miu Miu's brown pongé down jacket with a tan suede yoke, Max Mara's camel cashmere crewneck, Givenchy's gray checked wool wide-leg trousers, Miu Miu's cognac lace-ups, Brunello Cucinelli's greige shearling crossbody. A light down jacket folds over an arm in a heated store, and the crossbody leaves both hands free.
- Christmas Day lunch and a walk after (42°F, colder by dusk). Max Mara's camel-hair coat with its detachable scarf, Brunello Cucinelli's beige shawl-collar English-rib cashmere sweater, Max Mara's taupe belted cashmere midi skirt, Dolce & Gabbana's dark brown riding boots on their lug soles, Saint Laurent's caramel suede Le Sailor. Five shades of one warm family look deliberate, and the hem falls over the boot tops so no leg shows.
- An afternoon concert and early dinner (38°F). Oscar de la Renta's black belted wool midi dress over Gabriela Hearst's navy Costa turtleneck, sheer black tights, Aquazzura's black knee boots, Carolina Herrera's near-black wool cocoon coat, Miu Miu's burgundy bag. The cocoon's rounded sleeves leave room for the turtleneck, and burgundy lifts the black.
- Errands in rain turning to slush (35°F). Saint Laurent's mid-blue Neo '90s wide-leg jeans, Brunello Cucinelli's gray mohair-blend sweater, Fendi's black FF hooded down jacket, Bottega Veneta's off-white leather lace-up boots on a black treaded rubber sole, Balenciaga's black Le City, zipped. Our stylists hem wide jeans to clear the ground by about half an inch in the boots worn most, so denim never drags through slush.
- A neighborhood dinner (33°F). Dolce & Gabbana's black sleeveless virgin-wool sheath over the red-sleeved Grace top, opaque black tights, Tod's black Chelsea boots, Jil Sander's ivory quilted down jacket, Victoria Beckham's black Sloane Frame tote. Red at the arms and ivory in the jacket keep an all-black base from looking flat by candlelight.

Boots for this band need a rubber or lug sole, which grips slush where leather slides, and smooth leather, which wipes clean of salt. Every listing below names a rubber or lug sole (Aquazzura's is leather and rubber); for waterproofing and grip on ice, see the best winter boots.

Dresses and skirts for a holiday lunch
A sleeveless wool dress is more useful in winter than it looks: over a fine turtleneck it covers November to February. Choose wool or cashmere with weight, a hem at or below the knee, and tights in the color of your boots. All four dresses here are sleeveless or short-sleeved, so plan the turtleneck with the dress.

Winter outfits for 20 to 32°F: hard cold, three layers and a lined boot
Below freezing and usually dry, this is where the coat must insulate, not just cover. Camel hair, alpaca, shearling and down hold still air close to the body; a thin wool coat no longer does. Add a base under trousers, shearling-lined boots, a hat and gloves, and follow the National Weather Service's advice to cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs. See the best winter hats and the best designer gloves.
- The commute in freezing wind (30°F, 15 mph wind). Max Mara's dark brown peacoat in alpaca, wool and silk, Brunello Cucinelli's beige shawl-collar cashmere, Loewe's chocolate draped wool wide-leg trousers over merino leggings, Tod's dark brown shearling-lined lace-ups, TOTEME's taupe suede tote, a cashmere beanie. The wind makes it 19°F, so the pile coat earns its weight; wide trousers fall over the laces and shield the ankles.
- Dinner out when it is 25°F. Fendi's black hooded long-pile mohair-and-wool coat, Proenza Schouler's black ribbed Rosario turtleneck in merino with open-knit panels, Prada's near-black virgin-wool A-line midi skirt with a two-way zip, opaque black tights, Jimmy Choo's black shearling-lined Biker Mid boots, Miu Miu's burgundy bag. A coat that covers the skirt keeps legs warm from car to door; a low lined boot beats a stiletto on an icy curb. The Rosario's open-knit panels make it a layer for dinner, not for a long walk.
- The holiday market or an ice rink (28°F, standing still). Thom Browne's crimson cable-knit V-neck with an ivory anchor intarsia over Victoria Beckham's gray merino mock neck, The Row's navy corduroy trousers, Jil Sander's ivory quilted down jacket, Jimmy Choo's black lined boots, the greige shearling crossbody, mittens. Standing still is colder than walking, so the knits double up.
- A snowy Saturday in town (26°F). Max Mara's reversible camel-hair down jacket, Proenza Schouler's mustard Joelle cable knit in a mohair blend, ecru jeans, Brunello Cucinelli's espresso shearling-lined hiking boots, Prada's dark brown Bonnie. Fresh, dry snow is the one time pale denim and suede are safe.
- A family visit to a drafty house (22°F outside). Brunello Cucinelli's gray wool down jacket with a brown shearling collar, Stella McCartney's camel fisherman-rib sweater, Givenchy's gray checked wide-leg trousers, Jimmy Choo's chocolate shearling-lined Biker Mid boots, Miu Miu's burgundy bag. Old houses run cool, so the sweater is the warm layer you keep on indoors.
- A Hanukkah dinner (24°F). Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12 (Hebcal). Magda Butrym's beige mohair-and-wool midi skirt, Max Mara's ivory diamond-cable turtleneck, the dark brown riding boots, Max Mara's camel-hair scarf coat, Saint Laurent's caramel Le Sailor. Mohair's halo catches candlelight, and a tonal palette lets the table do the talking.

Winter outfits below 20°F: length, a hood and nothing exposed
This is Chicago in January, a snowy weekend away, any day the wind chill nears zero. The coat needs a hood and enough length to cover your seat on a cold bench; a base layer goes under everything, trousers included; and, as the NWS notes, mittens are warmer than gloves. Out for more than a few minutes, cover your face.
- A snowy weekend away (15°F). Brunello Cucinelli's knee-length belted down coat in taupe-brown taffeta with shearling at the hood, Max Mara's ivory cable turtleneck over silk, ecru jeans over silk long underwear, the espresso shearling-lined hikers, the greige shearling crossbody. Knee length and a belt trap warm air; laces close the boot against snow.
- The 7 a.m. school run or dog walk (12°F). Moncler's black Courcelles hooded mid-length down jacket, filled with 90 percent down per its listing, Victoria Beckham's gray merino mock neck, black jeans over thermal leggings, Jimmy Choo's black lined boots, a small black crossbody worn under the coat so the strap never flattens the down.
- Errands when the wind chill is below zero (5°F, 15 mph wind). On the NWS chart that reads -13°F. Balenciaga's black Hourglass belted down jacket with its high collar, Brunello Cucinelli's gray mohair-blend sweater, TOTEME's charcoal flannel trousers over silk long johns, Manolo Blahnik's black Tomosa boots, shearling-lined on lugged rubber soles per their listing, a balaclava and mittens. Keep the trip short.
- A sunny walk after a snowfall (18°F). Miu Miu's brown down jacket with the tan suede yoke, Stella McCartney's camel fisherman rib, ecru jeans over merino leggings, Tod's dark brown shearling-lined lace-ups, TOTEME's taupe tote. A hip-length jacket is enough while you keep moving; to stand still at this temperature, our stylists switch to a coat that covers the thighs.

The bag: what works over a winter coat
A thick coat adds inches at the shoulder, so a strap that sits right over a sweater rides up over down or alpaca. Our stylists' rules, with more shapes in our crossbody bag shop:
- Carry bags by hand over pile and shearling. A strap rubbing on teddy or long-pile wool flattens it over a season. Prada's Bonnie and Miu Miu's Aventure have top handles, according to their listings, and Victoria Beckham's Sloane Frame tote has a single top handle.
- Close the top in the wet band. Balenciaga's Le City zips, and TOTEME's small Mercer zips and stands on metal feet, per its listing. Saint Laurent's Le Sailor has a T-bar over an open top: a dry-day bag.
- Shearling bags are for dry cold. Brunello Cucinelli's greige crossbody is the warmest-looking bag here, and in our experience shearling spots in sleet.

What to buy once, and what to enjoy for one winter
Buy once: a knee-length wool or cashmere coat in a dark neutral or camel; a hooded down coat if your winters reach the bottom band; smooth leather boots on a rubber sole and one shearling-lined pair; two fine cashmere turtlenecks from your palette; wool trousers hemmed for boots. Those cover all four bands.
Enjoy for a season: a novelty intarsia knit like Thom Browne's anchor cable, a mustard mohair peplum, a tweed bustier dress, pale après boots in a city that salts its streets. They make an outfit, but you will reach for them less once the novelty fades, so spend accordingly.
The mistakes that make winter outfits cold or bulky
- Dressing for noon. The forecast high is rarely the temperature you walk home in.
- A chunky knit under a fitted coat. It binds outside and overheats you indoors. Pair heavy knits with roomy coats, fine knits with fitted ones.
- Cropped trousers with ankle boots below freezing. The bare ankle feels the cold first.
- Suede and pale shearling on slushy days. Save them for dry cold and fresh snow.
- Sheer tights below 32°F. Move to opaque wool tights, or a knee boot that meets the hem.
How we chose
Each coat earned its band from the fiber and fill on its listing: wool and cashmere for the mildest; camel hair, alpaca, shearling and down for the colder ones; only pieces whose listings name down for the coldest. Slush boots needed a rubber or lug sole named in the listing, and the shearling boots had to list shearling. We read every knit's composition and left out viscose and acrylic-heavy knits, which look warm and are not. Where a listing's color and its photograph disagree, the text follows the photograph: the listings call Max Mara's Alicia charcoal and its trench chocolate, and we describe them as the warm dark gray and the red-brown they photograph. Picks span 33 houses on our luxury list, most with four or more sizes; none is pre-owned.
Frequently asked questions
What should I wear when it is 40 degrees?
A wool or cashmere coat to the hip or knee over one fine knit, with trousers or jeans and leather boots. Add a scarf if it is windy: on the National Weather Service chart, a 20 mph wind makes 40°F feel like 30°F on exposed skin.
What should I wear in 30-degree weather?
Three layers on top: a silk or merino base, a warm knit, and a coat in camel hair, alpaca, shearling or down. Add leggings under trousers, shearling-lined boots, a hat, gloves and a scarf.
What do you wear when it is 20 degrees or below?
A hooded down coat that covers your seat, a base layer under top and trousers, a knit, lined boots with wool socks, mittens and a face covering. Check the wind chill: 20°F with a 20 mph wind feels like 4°F.
How do I layer for winter without looking bulky?
Keep the base thin, the knit fine and the coat roomy in the shoulders. Dress in one or two colors so the layers read as one line, and put the warmth in the coat and accessories rather than a thick sweater.
Can you wear a dress or skirt in winter?
Yes. Choose wool or a heavy knit at or below the knee, opaque tights, knee boots that meet the hem, and a coat that covers the skirt. A sleeveless wool dress over a fine turtleneck works from November to February.
What colors look best together in winter outfits?
Our stylists use four palettes: camel, cream and chocolate; black, gray and white with one red; navy and gray with burgundy or black; and blue jeans with black, gray, white or navy. They keep brown and camel away from navy, blue denim and black.
