The Alexander McQueen Guide: Tailoring, the Knuckle Clutch, the Skull Scarf and Sizing

Alexander McQueen is the London house that Lee Alexander McQueen, a tailor trained on Savile Row, founded in 1992. Its codes are a high, sharp shoulder, the low-slung bumster trouser, lace and corsetry, the skull, the Knuckle Clutch and the Oversized sneaker. Sarah Burton designed it from 2010 to 2023 and Seán McGirr from late 2023; on October 15, 2026, Kering announced that McGirr is leaving, and as of October 21, 2026, no successor had been named. If you buy one piece, make it a jacket with that shoulder. For a smaller first purchase, take the skull scarf or the Oversized sneaker; for evening, the Knuckle Clutch. Below: the history, the signatures for women and men, sizing at each store and what is worth the money.

Alexander McQueen history: Savile Row, Givenchy and Savage Beauty

The facts here follow the V&A's introduction to McQueen. Born in London in 1969, Lee McQueen left school at 16 to apprentice on Savile Row, at Anderson & Sheppard and then Gieves & Hawkes. He cut patterns for the theatrical costumiers Angels & Bermans, worked for Koji Tatsuno and for Romeo Gigli in Milan, then took the MA at Central Saint Martins; the stylist Isabella Blow bought his whole graduate collection. He launched his label in 1992, succeeded John Galliano at Givenchy in 1996 and stayed until 2001. In December 2000 the Gucci Group, now Kering, bought a majority of his company.

"Everything I do is based on tailoring," he said, and the museum traces the house's codes to that training: bumster trousers, sharp frock coats, slashed leather and shredded lace. The shows were theater:

  • Highland Rape (1995): drawn from his Scottish heritage and the Highland Clearances.
  • VOSS (spring 2001): staged around a glass box like a padded cell, with a bodice of mussel shells.
  • Scanners (fall 2003): models crossed wind tunnels suspended above the runway.
  • The Widows of Culloden (fall 2006): Kate Moss appeared as a ghostly projection in a glass pyramid.
  • Plato's Atlantis (spring 2010): his last runway show, the first fashion show live-streamed online and the debut of the Armadillo boot.

He was British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2001 and was made a CBE in 2003. He died in February 2010. The Met's Costume Institute staged Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty from May 4 to August 7, 2011, and drew 661,509 visitors; restaged at the V&A in London in 2015, it drew 493,043, the museum's attendance record until its Dior exhibition of 2019.

Sarah Burton's McQueen, 2010 to 2023

Sarah Burton joined McQueen's studio in 1996, before finishing her degree, and led womenswear from 2000, FashionUnited reported when she was promoted; the V&A notes that she completed his last, unfinished collection. In May 2010 the house and the Gucci Group, then part of PPR, made her creative director, and she designed the dress Catherine Middleton, now the Princess of Wales, wore to marry Prince William on April 29, 2011. The Knuckle Clutch, which the house says Lee McQueen introduced in 2009, gained new handles under her, among them the Rose for fall 2015 and the Rose and Snake for spring 2018, 10 Magazine notes, and in 2022 the Jewelled Satchel got its own film series. She showed her last collection, spring 2024, in Paris on September 30, 2023, after more than a quarter of a century at the house, and in September 2024 LVMH named her creative director of Givenchy, the house McQueen himself once designed.

Seán McGirr at McQueen, and who designs the house now

Kering appointed Seán McGirr, a Dublin-born Central Saint Martins graduate, on October 3, 2023. FashionUnited reported that he had been head of men's ready-to-wear at JW Anderson and had worked at Dries Van Noten, Uniqlo and Burberry. His first collection, fall 2024, was shown in Paris on March 2, 2024, after a campaign that revived a redrawn version of Lee McQueen's original logo, with the C inside the Q.

In our reading, his McQueen went back to the archive more than it invented. The Manta bag reworks the De Manta from Plato's Atlantis, and 10 Magazine reported in March 2026 that Tim Walker shot its first dedicated campaign. The house calls the Horn heel boot a reimagining of an archival silhouette. The T-Bar, a bar-shaped buckle, runs across bags, belts and shirts; 10 Magazine reported that the T-Bar Sling was unveiled with his spring 2025 collection. On September 20, 2026, he showed spring 2027 in the undercroft of Lincoln's Inn Chapel, its first show on the official London Fashion Week schedule since 2001, W Magazine reported, as did Forbes.

On October 15, 2026, Kering published the house's announcement that McGirr is leaving, three years after he arrived. Kering's chief executive, Luca de Meo, and the house's president and chief executive, Gianfranco D'Attis, thanked him, and the release said the house would soon announce its new creative leadership. As of October 21, 2026, no successor had been named.

What it means when you shop: nothing in this guide changes. Our judgement, not anything the house has said: a new designer usually rethinks the outgoing one's own pieces before the founder's signatures, so if a McGirr-era piece such as the Manta bag is the one you want, we would not wait for the next collection. The Knuckle Clutch and the skull scarf have already outlasted two designers.

Alexander McQueen tailoring for women: the shoulder and the bumster

In our view this is the part of McQueen no other house quite matches, and where we would spend first. The jackets are cut close at the waist and built up at the shoulder; Neiman Marcus describes the claret wool-mohair jacket in our edit as having "prominent shoulders," with a T-Bar chain at the back. The gray pinstripe jacket buttons asymmetrically under a high felt collar, the black waterfall-collar jacket is Japanese wool barathea, and the off-the-shoulder grain de poudre jacket comes with a removable harness. Bergdorf Goodman's Bumster trousers are slim, all wool and dip in a V at the center back. The corset top is boned wool tailoring with a front zip, so it wears like a waistcoat.

Fit, by our stylists' rule of thumb: buy McQueen jackets to fit the shoulder. Taking in a waist or shortening a sleeve is routine work for a tailor; rebuilding a padded, built-up shoulder is a far bigger and riskier job, and on a jacket cut this close a size too large shows at once.

  • Office: the gray cross-lapel jacket over the black corset top, with the charcoal pinstripe trousers and black Koko pumps.
  • Dinner: the claret jacket open over a black lace dress, with the silver Skull pumps.
  • Weekend: the waterfall-collar jacket with ecru jeans and white Oversized sneakers with a black heel tab.

McQueen dresses: lace, corsetry and evening

Lace has been a McQueen material since Lee McQueen's shredded lace, and corsetry runs through the current dresses. Read the fabric line, because it varies more than the prices suggest. By their listings, the heritage-lace dress is a compact wool and viscose knit with sheer lace at the chest and hem; the smocked corset dress is wool barathea with a sweetheart neckline; the gingham pencil dress is laced at the sides like a corset; the long evening dresses are crêpe-back satin, in red and in a shade the house calls peacock blue that photographs as teal; the black floral-lace dress is viscose satin with a sheer lace back; the Tree of Life mini is stretch-viscose jacquard; and Neiman Marcus's strapless corset gown is polyester and silk satin.

Our stylists' rule of thumb for corsetry: size a boned bodice to your ribcage and bust, not your hips. If those measure a size apart, buy for the top and ask a tailor about the skirt, which in our experience is the easier half to adjust.

  • Holiday party: the Tree of Life mini with black opaque tights and black Niko knee boots.
  • Black tie: the teal draped gown with the silver Knuckle Clutch and silver Skull sandals.
  • Winter wedding guest: the red lace-trim dress with the ivory Mini Jewelled Satchel.

McQueen bags: the Knuckle Clutch, the Jewelled Satchel and the Manta

The Knuckle Clutch is the bag to know: a box clutch whose handle is a row of four rings, a knuckleduster set with skulls and crystals. The house says it was first introduced by Lee McQueen in 2009. The others, from their listings:

BagWhat it isCarry it
Knuckle ClutchBox clutch with the four-ring handle; ours is crystal-covered suedeOn the fingers, or on its chain
Jewelled Satchel and MiniCroc-embossed calf flap bag with a ring handleBy hand, on the shoulder or across the body
Manta and Manta ClutchLeather folded over a rigid wave-shaped base, with corset lacing or laser-cut floralsTubular handles; the clutch has a detachable strap
WishboneSoft calf shoulder bag with gold wishbone hardwareOn a braided strap
LockeStructured top-handle with a heart-shaped padlockBy hand, or on its detachable strap
Skull Top HandleCroc-embossed calf with a silver skullRetractable handle or chain strap

Our pick for a first McQueen bag is the black Jewelled Satchel: its listing gives three ways to carry it, and the jewelled rings on the flap read as McQueen at a glance while the croc-embossed black leather keeps it in daytime. The Knuckle Clutch is an evening bag, worth it if you go out often. Croc-embossed leather hides scratches better than smooth nappa, in our experience. More shapes in the best evening bags and clutch bags.

Alexander McQueen shoes: the Horn heel, the Koko, the Niko and the Skull

By the house's listings, the Horn heel is curved and hand-painted, on a peep-toe mule in antiqued black leather and on a knee boot in antiqued white nappa with corset laces at the back. The Koko is a pointed black satin pump with silver brogue trim, a bow and a polished sculptural wedge. The Skull shoes are for evening: Bergdorf Goodman's 105 mm pump is covered in rhinestones with a skull charm at the back of the left shoe, and Neiman Marcus's 90 mm sandal is sequined satin. The Niko knee boot stands on a 95 mm block heel with a square toe and a metal plate around the heel; the Lexie is a lace-up mule on a 70 mm heel; the Wishbone creeper is a pointed, punk-inspired shoe lined in dark red.

For a long night, our stylists choose the Niko's 95 mm block over a 105 mm stiletto. The Lexie's 70 mm heel is lower still, but as a backless mule it suits a seated dinner better than a dance floor.

  • Work: the black Niko boots under a gray pinstripe skirt suit.
  • Cocktails: the silver Skull sandals with a black satin slip dress and nothing else that sparkles.

Alexander McQueen sneakers: the Oversized, the Boxe and the Tread Slick

The Oversized is a plain smooth-leather lace-up on a deep rubber sole, with wide flat laces and a contrast tab at the heel. Saks gives the platform as about 1.5 inches, and Neiman Marcus's men's listings name the model Larry. The versions differ mostly at the heel: a black suede tab, a black glitter one, a row of studs, or a tonal tab on the black pair. The Boxe is the slim alternative, low leather on a textured gum sole, in off-white or a silver its listing calls distressed and high-shine. The Tread Slick sets canvas on an oversized lug sole.

Fit: follow the note on the listing you buy from, because the stores disagree. Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman say their women's Oversized runs small and to order one size up; Saks says its women's pairs fit slightly small, half a size up. In our experience the thick sole makes them heavier than a slim sneaker: city shoes, not sightseeing ones.

  • The black-tabbed Oversized with gray wide-leg trousers and a cream cashmere crewneck.
  • The off-white Boxe, with its gum sole, under ecru jeans and an olive knit.

The McQueen skull scarf, and where else the skull turns up

The skull scarf first appeared in the Irere collection in 2003; for its tenth anniversary in 2013 the house asked Damien Hirst for 30 one-off designs built from insects arranged into the skull, Yatzer reported. What changes from scarf to scarf is the cloth. By their listings, the Classic is silk chiffon with a fringed edge, light enough to knot at the throat; the wool version, about 47 by 41 inches, goes over a coat; the double-face scarf is wool, cashmere and silk, crimson on one side and black on the other; the pleated skinny scarf is silk georgette; and the skull and spider floral is chiffon with a multicolored flower print over the skulls.

Our stylists' rule is one skull per outfit: a skull scarf with a skull bag and skull sneakers turns a signature into a costume. The Wishbone earrings, whose crystal chains detach, are the quieter route. For ties and silk care, see our guide to designer scarves, or browse scarves and wraps.

McQueen for men: tailoring

The men's tailoring is cut slim with a defined shoulder, and in our view it is where the Savile Row start shows most. The flecked pinstripe suit is gray melange wool, the jacket hung with a gunmetal chain harness. The skull jacquard suit weaves the skull into the cloth so it reads as texture across a room; Saks lists it as viscose and polyester, not wool. Neiman Marcus's two-button jacket is wool with gold-tone metallic embroidery on the lapels and a cutaway hem. The selvedge mohair trousers are plain black. The Prince of Wales check bomber is wool, in taupe and brown, with self-fabric frogging.

Size for chest and shoulder and have the trousers hemmed. Saks sizes the skull jacquard jacket in US sizes and its trousers by waist; Neiman Marcus numbers the embroidered jacket European style.

  • Dinner: the embroidered jacket with the black mohair trousers, a white shirt and Niko patent derbies.
  • Office: the flecked pinstripe suit with the black harness shirt and no tie.
  • Weekend: the check bomber over a cream knit, with gray flannel trousers and all-white sneakers.

For another house's evening tailoring, see our Tom Ford guide.

Men's shirts and knitwear: the harness shirt and the skull

The harness shirt is the McQueen piece for a man who would never wear a printed skull. A strap crosses the shoulder and fastens with a metal buckle; the black poplin version has double-button cuffs, Saks's T-Bar version is white cotton, and Saks also has a charcoal flannel one for winter. The harness polo puts the strap on cotton piqué. In knitwear, the Tree of Life jumper is a wool jacquard of trees in black and what its listing calls burnt coral, which reads as red; the distressed skull sweater is cotton; the indigo crewneck is wool with intarsia skulls; and the gray wool polo sweater is embroidered with pale flowers down the lower sleeves. The house store sizes its shirts by collar, in inches.

  • The Tree of Life jumper over the white T-Bar shirt, with black trousers and black Oversized sneakers.
  • The indigo skull crewneck with gray flannel trousers and white Oversized sneakers.

McQueen sneakers and boots for men

For men the Oversized comes in all black, down to the sole; in white with a black-edged heel; and, at Neiman Marcus, with a black and red skull print on the heel tab. The house store sizes it in Italian sizes, half sizes included, and several Saks men's listings say it runs large. The Sprint Runner is the sportier pair, leather on a platform of about 30 mm, by Saks; the men's Boxe is slim nappa with an angled stripe. For dressier days, the Niko derby is black patent with an elongated square toe and a metal heel plaque, the Biker boot buckles a strap over a front zip, and the Sofa Chelsea boot sits on a light lug sole, finished with an embossed inverted skull.

If you own one pair, our stylists say all black: it goes under tailoring, where a white sole stands out, and hides city grime. Compare other houses in the best designer sneakers for men, or shop McQueen for men.

Alexander McQueen sizing: how it runs at each store

Each store that sells McQueen labels sizes its own way. What the listings in this guide show, as of October 2026:

CategoryHow it is sizedWatch for
Women's clothingHouse store: US numeric sizes (0, 2, 4 and up). Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus: European numbering, as on the Bumster trousersCorset bodices sized to the top half
Women's shoesHouse store: Italian sizes, with half sizes. Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus: European with the US size alongside, so 37 is a US 7. Saks and Mytheresa: USOversized: one size up at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, half a size up at Saks
Men's tailoring and knitwearHouse store: shirts by collar in inches; jackets, trousers and knitwear on numbered scales that vary by piece. Saks: US jacket and waist sizes on the skull jacquard suit. Neiman Marcus: EuropeanCheck which system each listing uses
Men's shoesHouse store: Italian, with half sizes. Neiman Marcus: European with the US size alongside, so 40 is a US 7. Saks: USSome Saks Oversized listings run large

The women's and men's conversions differ by three: on these listings a European 40 is a US 10 for women and a US 7 for men. Unsure where to start? Our personal stylists can talk it through.

Is Alexander McQueen worth it? What to buy first

In our view McQueen is worth it where the tailoring shows: the built-up shoulder and close waist are hard to find elsewhere in ready-to-wear. In order, we would buy:

  1. Women: a black or claret jacket with the house shoulder, then the black Jewelled Satchel, then a Classic skull scarf.
  2. Men: the black harness shirt, then all-black Oversized sneakers, then the flecked pinstripe suit.
  3. For evening: the Knuckle Clutch, or the Niko boots for winter parties.
  4. A way in under $600: a silk skull scarf, the skull and pearl bracelet or the Oversized sneaker.

One-season pleasures: glitter and studded heel tabs, laser-cut leather, the Tree of Life prints and crystal-covered heels. The mistake we see most is three signatures at once, such as a skull scarf, a Knuckle Clutch and Skull pumps. Let one McQueen piece lead. To build an outfit around it, ask our AI stylist.

If you like McQueen, look at these houses too: Saint Laurent for the sharp-shouldered women's tuxedo; Tom Ford for evening tailoring with less theater; Balenciaga for sculpted shapes (see our Balenciaga guide); Givenchy, which LVMH put in Sarah Burton's hands in 2024; and Burberry, another London house (see our Burberry guide).

How we chose

This guide covers McQueen alone, chosen by signature rather than season: the shoulder and the bumster, lace and corsetry, each current bag family, the Horn, Koko, Niko and Skull shoes, three sneaker lines, the skull scarf in four cloths, and the men's harness shirt and suits. Every piece is new, from the house's own US online store or one of the retailers we carry, with resale listings left out. We looked at every photograph, because color names mislead: a dress called peacock blue is teal, and a skull jacquard suit listed as brown looks almost black. McQueen sells one piece through several stores, so we skipped anything our other guides carry under any store's listing, and we preferred pieces in at least four sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the creative director of Alexander McQueen?

On October 15, 2026, Kering announced that Seán McGirr, creative director since October 2023, is leaving. As of October 21, 2026, no successor had been named; the house said it would soon announce its new creative leadership.

Who owns Alexander McQueen?

Kering, the French group that also owns Gucci and Saint Laurent. The Gucci Group, now part of Kering, bought a majority stake in December 2000, while Lee McQueen was still designing.

Do Alexander McQueen sneakers run small?

For women, usually: Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman say one size up in the Oversized, and Saks half a size up. Men's pairs do not: several Saks listings advise a half or a whole size down and some Neiman Marcus ones say true to size, so follow the note on your pair.

Who designed the Princess of Wales's wedding dress?

Sarah Burton, then creative director of Alexander McQueen, for the wedding on April 29, 2011. She led McQueen until 2023 and was named creative director of Givenchy in September 2024.

What is the McQueen Knuckle Clutch?

A box clutch whose handle is a row of four rings, like a knuckleduster, often set with skulls and crystals. The house says Lee McQueen introduced it in 2009.

Is McQueen the same brand as Alexander McQueen?

Yes. The house's logo, a refreshed version of Lee McQueen's original wordmark, reads McQueen, and many of its product names use the short form, but it is the same London house he founded in 1992. On Vêtir every piece is listed under Alexander McQueen.
