The Best Wide-Leg Trousers: Tailored, Pleated, Sailor, Barrel, Palazzo and Evening

In our stylists' view, the best wide-leg trousers sit at your natural waist, fall straight and full from the hip, and are hemmed for one height of shoe so the hem almost touches the floor. If you buy one pair, make it high-rise wool in black, charcoal or navy with a pressed crease, such as Carolina Herrera's wool crepe pair or The Row's pleated Daniela: it goes to the office with a fine knit and to dinner with silk. Every other wide leg is a variation on that pair: pleated, high-waisted sailor, barrel and balloon, palazzo, satin for evening, cashmere and jersey, denim and cropped.
Below: how to judge rise, pleats, fabric and hem length, then nine edits of 70 pairs from 29 houses, outfit formulas and care. Trousers are a frequent request here: in typed requests to Vêtir's AI stylist over the 12 months to September 26, 2026, 93 users, women and men together, named trousers, one fewer than named jeans or denim.
How to choose wide-leg trousers: rise, pleats and fabric
Rise
Volume below the hip reads as length only when the waistband sits at the narrowest part of your torso, so the line runs unbroken from waist to floor. A mid-rise wide leg cuts you at the hip and makes the same cloth look heavier. To compare a rise before you order, measure a pair you own from the crotch seam to the top of the front waistband and set it against the listing, when the listing gives one. Then sit on a hard chair in the fitting room: a rise that is too short drags the back waistband down and pulls the cloth tight across the seat.
Pleats or a flat front
Pleats add room at the hip and seat and then release into the leg, so a pleated pair hangs fuller than a flat-front pair with the same hem. They suit a fuller hip and thigh and soft, heavy cloth like flannel. A flat front is cleaner under a tucked fine knit and better in stiff cloth that would stand away from the body. Stand still in front of a mirror: pleats should hang closed and straight into the crease, and if they spread into a V, the hip is a size too small. Khaite's August pant shows how subtle pleats can be: its listing says the paired reverse pleats are placed close in, to preserve the clean lines.
Fabric and drape
In our experience, wool twill and gabardine hold the sharpest crease; flannel is brushed, warmer and softer, with a rounder crease; and wool crepe, with its dry, grainy surface, drapes well and shakes off creases from sitting. Mohair blended into wool gives a crisp cloth with a faint luster. Satin is a weave, not a fiber: it can be silk, or the acetate and viscose of Jil Sander's satin pair (74 percent acetate, 26 percent viscose by its Saks listing), which give the sheen for less but, in our experience, crease and water-mark more readily. The same goes for cady: Mytheresa lists The Row's Gala cady pants as 69 percent triacetate and 31 percent polyester and TOTEME's cady pants as 100 percent viscose, while Valentino's red Cady Couture pair in our evening edit is pure silk. Read the label rather than the name. The Federal Trade Commission's guide to textile labeling requires fibers to be listed by weight in descending order of predominance, so the first fiber named is what you are mostly buying, and it accepts viscose, the ISO name, for the predominant form of rayon.
How long should wide-leg trousers be? Hem length with flats and heels
A well-cut wide leg does not break. A break is the fold a straight trouser makes where the hem lands on the shoe; a wide leg's opening is wider than the shoe, so the hem hangs free and length is measured to the floor. Our stylists' rule of thumb for full-length pairs: in the shoes you will wear, the back of the hem clears the floor by half an inch to an inch, and the front covers the top of the foot so only the toe shows. That looks deliberate standing still and does not sweep the sidewalk.
Heel height decides the rest. Every inch of heel you take away drops the hem by about as much, so a pair hemmed for a three-inch heel drags in loafers. In our experience one hem serves shoes within about an inch of each other; beyond that, hem for the shoe you wear most and buy a second pair for the other, rather than splitting the difference. The table below is our stylists' guide to where each hem should land.
| Shoe | Full-length wide leg | Cropped wide leg |
|---|---|---|
| Flats and loafers | Hemmed in the flats; a pointed or square toe shows under the hem | Ends at or just above the ankle bone |
| Pumps and heeled sandals | Hemmed in the heels; toe showing, heel covered | Ends above the ankle, showing the whole shoe |
| Knee boots | Covers the boot completely | The hem overlaps the boot shaft, so no leg shows |
Listings help. Saks's listings give an inseam of about 34 inches for Carolina Herrera's wool wide legs and for Jil Sander's satin pair, both shown on a model five feet ten inches tall, so most women will need them shortened. Saks's listing for Valentino's cropped Crepe Couture trouser gives a length of 96 centimeters (37.8 inches) from the waist in an Italian 40. Some pairs arrive unhemmed: Mytheresa's listing for Saint Laurent's wool-and-mohair wide legs says the hem is unfinished, ready for alteration. Bring the shoes to the tailor, stand on a hard floor rather than carpet, and ask for a heel guard, a strip of tape sewn inside the back of the hem, where wide legs wear out first on city pavement.
Tailored wide-leg pants in wool: the pair to buy first
Carolina Herrera cuts its pair in wool crepe, in black and in the ivory Diane, with a banded waist and a concealed side zip, so nothing interrupts the front. The Row's pleated Daniela, in a virgin wool its listing calls dark navy but that photographs close to black, is lined in silk, which in our experience helps wool slide over tights. Tom Ford finishes his black pair with front creases, and Victoria Beckham's dark charcoal Alina is listed as falling to a floor-length hem, so plan on heels or a tailor. Chloé's wool crêpe pair is the most fluid here; Jil Sander's navy wool-and-mohair canvas is crisper. Max Mara's olive-brown wool pair has a detachable belt and, unusually for tailoring, a listing that gives a machine wash at 30 degrees.
- Black wool crepe wide legs, a black fine merino turtleneck tucked in, a long gray coat, black pointed flats.
- Navy wide legs, a white poplin shirt, a navy double-breasted blazer, black loafers.
- Ivory wool wide legs, an ivory cashmere crewneck, a camel coat and cream suede pumps.

Pleated wide-leg trousers
Pleats are where winter cloth earns its keep: flannel and camel hair have the weight to fall from a pleat in a soft, straight column. Max Mara's pleated pair is 100 percent camel hair in dark brown (camel hair is a fiber, not only a color). Brunello Cucinelli's gray pair is 95 percent wool and 5 percent cashmere, and Saint Laurent's chocolate pair is 75 percent wool and 25 percent mohair. Magda Butrym's ivory pair, 74 percent silk and 26 percent wool and lined in silk, reads as evening. Valentino's pinstripe and Prada's check bring pattern; TOTEME's black crepe pair has double pleats and nothing else. Pleats ask for a tucked top so they show, and a little weight in the shoe to anchor the volume.
- Charcoal pleated flannel, a black cashmere turtleneck tucked in, black leather loafers.
- Dark brown camel hair pleats, a cream silk shirt, a chocolate suede belt and brown suede loafers.
- Ivory pleated silk and wool, an ivory knit, a camel coat and burgundy velvet slippers for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 26.

High-waisted sailor trousers
The sailor trouser's signature is the button front, buttons on a front panel in place of a fly, on a waistband set high. In "Have Bell Bottoms … Will Travel," published in the June 1955 issue of the Navy's magazine All Hands and reproduced by the Naval History and Heritage Command, Bob Ohl wrote that the 13 buttons on the enlisted man's trousers did not stand for the 13 colonies: before 1894 there were seven, and 13 arrived when the broadfall front was enlarged, simply for the symmetry of the design. The same article quotes Navy files describing Commodore Stephen Decatur's sailors, arriving in New York in 1813, in "blue trousers with bell bottoms."
Carolina Herrera's Alba, in navy or white cotton stretch, has a goldtone sailor button front and pressed creases front and back. Max Mara's white pair puts the buttons on the pockets, in denim cotton twill that its listing says can be machine washed cold, and Brunello Cucinelli makes an ecru sailor jean. For the high waist without buttons, Max Mara's dark navy woollen cloth trousers carry a wide waistband tab and a matching belt, Loewe's black pair folds an asymmetric overlay across the front, and Dries Van Noten's moiré gathers pleats under a belt. The buttons are the ornament, so keep the top plain and tucked.
- Navy sailor trousers, a cream fisherman crewneck tucked at the front, a navy peacoat, black loafers.
- White sailor trousers, an ivory cashmere turtleneck, a camel coat and cream loafers.

Barrel and balloon trousers
A barrel leg curves out below the hip and back in toward the ankle; a balloon trouser takes the curve further and often ends in a cuff or elastic. Length matters more here than anywhere: a barrel has to end at or just above the ankle bone so the curve closes, and one that puddles on the shoe looks like the wrong size. ALAÏA's are the most sculptural, in ivory wool crêpe and anthracite virgin wool. Balenciaga and Loewe cut theirs in pure wool; Ferragamo adds front pleats, a self belt and rolled cuffs; Jacquemus's Ovalo is a cotton and wool blend; Magda Butrym's virgin wool pair is machine washable at 30 degrees by its listing; Max Mara's flannel balloon gathers into elastic ankle cuffs. Above the curve, wear a top that stops at the waist or a long, lean coat, never a boxy sweater that ends where the curve begins, and keep the shoe neat: a loafer, a pointed flat or a slim heeled ankle boot.

Palazzo pants for hosting and holiday dinners
The Victoria and Albert Museum credits the Roman designer Princess Irene Galitzine with creating the "palazzo pyjama" ensemble, and notes that Jacqueline Kennedy wore Galitzine's palazzo pyjamas for informal entertaining. The museum describes the style as tapered trousers with a boxy tunic, and its own example, from about 1963, is pink silk with a beaded top. The palazzo pant sold today is the opposite, full and fluid from waist to floor, usually silk with an elastic or banded waist, but it is still the trouser for entertaining at home.
Prints are the point: Pucci's Passepartout silk twill, Valentino's printed silk twill, Zimmermann's Aster, Etro's print and Balenciaga's snake print. For a plain pair, Max Mara's silk Volonta is navy with an elastic waist, and Oscar de la Renta's ivory georgette (94 percent silk, 6 percent elastane) is lined in silk. Dolce&Gabbana's palazzo is sheer silk chiffon, so wear it over a slip or silk shorts. Keep the top plain and close to the body: a fine knit in one of the print's colors, or a silk shell. At home, let the hem graze the floor in velvet slippers; for dinner out, hem for the heel, because silk hems pick up everything on a sidewalk.

Satin, taffeta and velvet wide legs for holiday evenings
A wide leg in a dress fabric does what a gown does with less fuss, and it is warmer on a December walk to the car. Givenchy's double-pleat tuxedo trousers are 73 percent wool and 27 percent mohair, with satin bands down the legs. The Row's Gala is silk taffeta, which in our experience stands slightly away from the leg and rustles as you walk. Brunello Cucinelli's champagne pair and Zimmermann's belted chocolate pair are pure silk satin; Valentino's red is silk cady. Dolce&Gabbana prints its black silk satin with red roses, TOTEME's black velvet is 75 percent viscose and 25 percent silk, and Jil Sander's satin is acetate and viscose. Satin and taffeta mark at the lap through a long dinner, so steam them just before you leave.
- The office party: tuxedo wide legs, a white silk shirt, black velvet slippers.
- Christmas Eve: red silk wide legs, a black cashmere turtleneck, gold earrings, black pumps.
- New Year's Eve: champagne silk satin, an ivory cashmere crewneck, gold sandals.

Cashmere and jersey wide legs for weekends and travel
Soft wide legs look dressed on a long flight or a slow Sunday in a way sweatpants never will. The Row's Orpin is 100 percent cashmere with an elastic waist; Max Mara's pure cashmere pair ties at the waist and is labeled for hand washing; Gabriela Hearst's Vargas is cashmere with inverted pleats anchored, the house says, by a hand-worked herringbone stitch. In jersey: Brunello Cucinelli's burgundy cotton pair, Stella McCartney's almond cotton jersey (machine washable at 30 degrees by its listing), Max Mara's Olmo and Dries Van Noten's pleated plum mélange. Missoni's open knit is 76 percent viscose: pretty, not warm. Knit wide legs bag at the seat and knee when worn day after day, so rest them between wears and fold them; hung by the waistband, they grow.
- Anthracite cashmere wide legs, a matching cashmere crewneck, a long camel coat and white leather sneakers.
- Rosewood cashmere wide legs, an ivory cable sweater and brown suede loafers for a family Thanksgiving.

Wide-leg jeans cut like trousers
Our guide to the best designer jeans covers rise, denim weight and washes; this edit is denim cut like tailoring. Dries Van Noten, Dolce&Gabbana, Loewe and Brunello Cucinelli put pleats in the front, and Brunello's charcoal wide-leg denim trousers are, by their listing, tailored to accommodate the lift of a heel. Givenchy's pair has pressed creases and deep turn-ups, which in our experience add weight at the hem so the leg swings. Gabriela Hearst cuts its Norman trouser, belt and all, in cotton denim, and Khaite's Dane comes in black, 98 percent cotton and 2 percent polyurethane. Keep the rest of the outfit tailored and the denim reads as a trouser.
- Dark indigo pleated jeans, a white shirt, a black blazer and black loafers.
- Black wide-leg jeans, a gray cashmere turtleneck, a black wool coat and black ankle boots.

Cropped wide-leg trousers and culottes
A cropped wide leg ends at or above the ankle and shows the whole shoe, so it is a trouser for good loafers, slingbacks or boots. Valentino's Crepe Couture trouser is 65 percent virgin wool and 35 percent silk, unlined, with cuffed ankles. Khaite's Clover is a pull-on in double-faced wool whose legs curve and stop above the ankle, and Brunello Cucinelli's brown herringbone pair, 70 percent wool and 30 percent polyamide, has front pleats, turn-ups and an elasticated waistband. Loewe's culottes are cotton and silk gabardine, Chloé's cropped pair is organic silk crêpe de chine with a ruffled hem, and Carolina Herrera's white crop ties at the waist. Max Mara's Pece, a cotton blend, is machine washable by its listing. In winter, wear a cropped pair over a knee boot whose shaft disappears under the hem. If you are petite, keep shoe and trouser in one color, because a cropped wide leg shortens the leg at the hem and again at the width.

How to wear wide-leg trousers: knits, jackets and coats
The rule our stylists come back to: one volume at a time, and show the waist. The trousers carry the volume, so what goes on top should be close to the body or deliberately short.
- Knits. Tuck a fine-gauge knit all the way in. A chunky sweater works if it stops at the waistband; long and loose over wide legs, it turns the outfit into one block. Our guide to turtlenecks for women covers the fine ones that tuck flat.
- Shirts. Tuck them in and let them blouse slightly; a silk shirt with wide wool legs is the easiest evening outfit there is. See the best silk blouses for weights that tuck without bulk.
- Jackets. Choose one that ends at the waist or one that covers the seat. A jacket that stops at the widest point of the hip draws a line across the fullest part of the body.
- Coats. Long means at least to the knee; a short puffer works only if it ends at the waist.
- Shoes. A pointed or square toe showing under the hem finishes the line, while round ballet flats tend to vanish. Our edit of designer loafers covers the lug soles that hold their own under wide wool trousers.
| Occasion | Trousers | Top | Layer | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The office | Charcoal pleated flannel | Black merino turtleneck, tucked | Long gray wool coat | Black loafers. |
| A presentation | Navy wool wide legs | White poplin shirt | Navy double-breasted blazer | Black pumps. |
| Saturday | Ecru sailor jeans | Chocolate cashmere crewneck | Brown suede jacket | Brown suede loafers. |
| A long flight | Cashmere wide legs | Matching cashmere crewneck | Long cashmere cardigan | White leather sneakers. |
| The holiday party | Black silk taffeta | Sheer black blouse over a camisole | Black tuxedo jacket | Silver sandals. |

How to care for wide-leg trousers
Wide legs show every crease, so storage matters as much as cleaning. Hang woven pairs full length from clip hangers at the hem, where the weight of the leg pulls out the creases of wearing, or fold them over a padded bar along the pressed crease. To press wool, Woolmark's ironing guide recommends the wool or two-dot setting, a spray of water or steam, no heavy pressure because it makes the surface shiny, and five minutes lying flat before you hang woven pieces; Max Mara's listing for its woollen cloth trousers adds a cloth between iron and wool. Steam velvet rather than ironing it, and leave satin and taffeta to the steamer or the cleaner their labels name. Fold knit pairs. After a wet evening, brush the back hem once it is dry and check the heel guard.
What to buy once, and what to wear for a season
Buy once: dark tailored wool with a crease, a pleated flannel or camel hair pair, and one black evening pair in crepe, taffeta or tuxedo cloth. None of the three depends on a trend, and each can be re-hemmed for next year's shoes. Treat barrels and balloons, sheer palazzos and logo velvet as pleasures for a season or two, and spend on them accordingly. Pleated denim and culottes sit between the two: they last as long as the shoes you wear them with.
How we chose
We chose by shape before brand. Every pair had to be wide from the hip, so we dropped listings named wide-leg that photograph as slim straight legs, bootcuts or tapered pants, and judged curve, pleat depth and crop from the flat photographs. We read every fiber line and named viscose, acetate, triacetate and polyurethane where they appear, kept the cashmere promise to pairs labeled cashmere, named each color as the photograph shows it, and left out a pair listed as black that photographs as navy. We preferred listings with a long run of sizes and passed over pairs down to their last two. Every pair is new and comes from a house on our luxury list.
Frequently asked questions
How long should wide-leg trousers be?
Our stylists' rule for a full-length pair: in the shoes you will wear, the back of the hem sits about half an inch to an inch off the floor, with the front covering the top of the foot so only the toe shows. A cropped pair ends at or just above the ankle bone. In our experience, one hem rarely works for shoes more than about an inch apart in heel height.
What shoes go with wide-leg trousers?
Pointed or square-toe flats, loafers and pumps for full-length pairs, because the toe shows under the hem; loafers, pointed flats or slim heeled ankle boots for barrels; slingbacks, loafers or a knee boot hidden under the hem for cropped pairs.
Are wide-leg pants flattering on petite women?
Yes, when the rise is high, the hem nearly reaches the floor and the shoe is close in color to the trouser, so the leg reads as one long line. Choose a moderate width over a very full palazzo, and a flat front or single pleat over double pleats.
What is the difference between wide-leg pants and palazzo pants?
Wide-leg pants are usually tailored, with a fly, pockets and a pressed crease, and fall straight from the hip. Palazzo pants are fuller and more fluid, typically silk or crepe with an elastic or banded waist, and move with you rather than holding a crease.
What top should I wear with wide-leg trousers?
Something fitted or short: a tucked fine knit or silk shirt, a bodysuit, or a sweater that ends at the waistband, under a waist-length jacket or a long coat.
Can you wear wide-leg trousers in winter?
Yes. Choose flannel, camel hair, wool crepe or cashmere, hem them to cover your boots, and wear a coat that reaches at least the knee.
