The Best Fall Jackets for Women: Nine Types, the Weather Each Suits and How to Wear Them

The best fall jackets for women are built for the stretch of weather between a sweater and a coat, roughly 45 to 65°F. For most wardrobes that means two jackets: a suede or leather jacket for dry days, because it cuts the wind and dresses an outfit up, and a waxed barn jacket or a quilted jacket for wet and colder ones. Add a wool tweed or tailored jacket if your days end in an office or a restaurant. Below: the nine fall jacket types worth buying this year, the date jacket weather reaches ten US cities, what to wear with each, and the best designer fall jackets from Khaite, TOTEME, Loewe, The Row and Burberry, plus an edit under $1,500.

The best fall jackets for women, at a glance

Each jacket has a temperature it handles best and weather it cannot handle. The ranges are our stylists' working guide, not a standard: nudge them up if you run cold, and on windy days favor a jacket that blocks wind over one that is merely thick. The trench, fall's rain jacket, has its own buying guide.

Our own users are reaching for jackets: in the first seven weeks of Vêtir's search box, from August 6 to September 26, 2026, 60 accounts searched for a jacket against 20 for a coat, and 27 searched for suede.

Fall jackets 2026: when jacket weather reaches your city

We count jacket weather from the day the normal afternoon high drops below 65°F until the normal morning low drops below 40°F, when we hand over to a coat. The dates below are our own reading of NOAA's 1991–2020 U.S. Climate Normals, not dates NOAA publishes: for each city's main weather station we took the daily normal high and low, rounded them to the nearest degree, and noted the first day after September 1 on which each falls below the line. They are 30-year averages, not a forecast.

City (station)High below 65°FHigh below 55°FLow below 40°F
Boston (Logan)October 10November 8November 11.
Chicago (O'Hare)October 13November 3November 2.
Seattle (Sea-Tac)October 6November 5November 24.
Denver (Denver International)October 18November 12October 10.
New York (Central Park)October 16November 15November 25.
Washington (Reagan National)October 30November 26November 23.
Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson)November 15December 26December 9.
Dallas (DFW)November 22Never; lowest normal high 56°FDecember 10.
San Francisco (downtown)November 13Never; lowest normal high 57°FNever.
Los Angeles (downtown)Never; lowest normal high 67°FNeverNever.

The gap between the first and last columns is your jacket season. New York gets almost six weeks, from mid-October to Thanksgiving week. Boston gets about a month and Chicago three weeks, and the 55-degree line follows fast, so the quilted and shearling-collar jackets earn their keep there. Seattle's seven weeks are wet as well as cool: on the same normals, each of those days has about an even chance of measurable rain, so buy waxed or quilted. Denver is the odd one: its normal low drops below 40°F a week before the afternoon high drops below 65°F, and on October 15 a normal day runs from 37°F at dawn to the mid-60s, so choose a jacket that warms the neck and opens up by lunch. In Los Angeles a jacket is an evening layer; in San Francisco, where normal highs stay between 57 and 71°F all year, a tweed or chore jacket works in any month. By October 20, on these normals, jacket weather has arrived in the first five cities in the table; Washington follows at the end of the month, Atlanta and Dallas in the second half of November.

Suede jackets: the fall jacket for dry days

Suede has the softest hand of any fall jacket, and most of this season's best are cut like shirts. Max Mara's is dark green lambskin suede lined in silk; The Row's Janine is hip-length with notch lapels; Proenza Schouler's Irine comes in a deep olive the house calls Cypress. Khaite's Alder is cut loose and tied with a wide belt, which gives a relaxed jacket a waist over a thin sweater.

Read the skin on the listing. Lambskin suede, used here by Max Mara, The Row, Alaïa and Prada, is the softest; Loewe's tan jacket is goat suede, so compare the two in person if you can. Miu Miu and Prada list a final waxing treatment, which gives the nap a closed, faintly burnished look. That is a finish, not waterproofing. Pale suede shows every mark from a bag strap or a wet day, while tobacco, chestnut, olive and dark green forgive far more, so we would buy a first suede jacket in one of them.

Try it on over the sweater you will wear with it most and check the cuffs: a sleeve that ends at the wrist bone over a T-shirt rides up once a knit is underneath. Caught in a shower, blot it, let it dry at room temperature on a broad hanger, and brush the nap up once it is dry.

  • Tan belted suede, a cream turtleneck, gray flannel trousers and chocolate suede loafers.
  • Dark green suede shirt jacket over an ivory cable knit, with ecru jeans and brown ankle boots.
  • Brown suede over a burgundy knit midi dress, with tall brown boots.

Leather jackets for fall: the field, shirt-collar and funnel-neck shapes

Our guide to the best leather jackets covers bikers, bombers and blazers. Fall leather is often longer, roomier and collared, with closures that seal against wind. Loewe's olive-brown lambskin utility jacket is the field jacket of the group, with flap patch pockets, a corduroy collar and a throat latch, the small strap that buttons the collar shut in wind. Magda Butrym's espresso sheep leather keeps to a spread collar over a zip and snaps, Saint Laurent's dark olive lambskin hides its zip under a snap placket and pulls in at an elasticated waist, and Ferragamo's Cervo is deerskin, slim, with notch lapels and a double back vent. TOTEME's Garderob, grained leather with a spread collar and a satin lining, is the plainest here and will date least.

For the funnel neck, a shape our report on fall and winter coat trends tracks across the season, Saint Laurent's is heavyweight calf suede with dropped shoulders, and Elie Saab buttons a high stand collar above a belted, double-breasted front in camel nappa. A high neck does a scarf's job, so wear small earrings and a fine knit under it, not a collared shirt. One note on finish: lightly finished leathers, such as the natural vachetta some houses use, darken and soften with light and handling, while a grained leather like TOTEME's hides scuffs and changes less. Choose the first if you like a jacket that shows its years.

  • Cognac or camel leather jacket, a cream fisherman sweater, gray wide-leg trousers and dark brown boots.
  • Olive-brown utility jacket over an ivory silk shirt and ecru jeans.
  • High-necked leather jacket closed to the chin over a fine cream crewneck, with taupe trousers.

Barn jackets and field jackets

A barn jacket is a country work jacket: hip-length or longer, cut roomy for a sweater, in cotton canvas or waxed cotton, with a corduroy collar and big patch pockets. It is the most practical jacket here and the least precious. TOTEME's Country jackets set the standard at their price, in waxed organic cotton canvas with corduroy collars and elbow patches. The Row's Benka, from the house's fall 2026 collection, is beige cotton canvas with a contrast corduroy collar and brown buttons, and Isabel Marant's Lavine is the dressy outlier, ivory cotton embroidered with sequins under a leather collar.

The field jacket is the tidier relative, with chest pockets. The Row's Floriane is cotton and cashmere canvas with four flap pockets and a concealed zip; Loewe makes a cropped, belted cotton gabardine and a navy canvas utility jacket, both with corduroy collars. Brunello Cucinelli's padded canvas with a leather-trimmed collar is the warmest, the one to keep wearing into November.

Waxed cotton sheds a shower because the wax sits in the weave, and it wears thin at elbows, cuffs and folds. Barbour, the wax-jacket maker founded in South Shields, England, in 1894, advises sponging the outside with cold water, never using a washing machine, soap or detergent, drying it somewhere cool and airy, out of direct sun, and reproofing once a year. TOTEME lists Danish sizes, DK32 to DK42, and the listing for its oversized waxed version says it runs large; if you wear chunky knits, size for them.

  • Olive waxed barn jacket, a cream cable knit, ecru jeans and brown lug-sole boots.
  • Khaki canvas barn jacket over a burgundy knit midi dress, with tall brown boots.
  • Navy utility jacket over a gray sweatshirt, with white jeans and white sneakers.

Chore jackets and work jackets

The chore jacket is the old French worker's jacket: boxy, buttoned and collared, with three or four patch pockets. In canvas it is a 60-degree jacket; in wool or cashmere it becomes a layer you wear outside in October and under a coat in December. Balenciaga's is heavyweight cotton canvas with a calfskin collar, cropped and boxy. Casablanca's is monogram cotton with leather trims, and, unusually for a designer jacket, its listing allows a delicate machine wash. Loewe's blends wool, cashmere and leather; Saint Laurent's chestnut cotton serge zips up and gathers at an elasticated hem.

The softest are cashmere. Jil Sander and Gabriela Hearst both use double-faced cashmere, a cloth with two finished sides, which is how Gabriela Hearst's Ulu can be worn inside out, bordeaux one way and fuchsia the other. Burberry's overshirt is check-intarsia cashmere with horn buttons, and Loro Piana's Darby is a wool and cashmere check lined in silk. Cashmere is warm but not windproof, so keep it for still days. Buy a chore jacket for how it hangs open, since that is how you will wear it most, but make sure it buttons over your thickest knit. More in our shirt and utility jackets.

  • Brown-gray wool chore jacket, an ivory turtleneck, gray flannel trousers and burgundy loafers.
  • Bordeaux cashmere chore jacket over a cream silk shirt and ecru wide-leg jeans.
  • Beige canvas workwear jacket, a white T-shirt, black straight trousers and black loafers.

Tweed and bouclé jackets

Tweed is a rough woven wool, often in several colors at once; bouclé is woven from looped yarn, which gives it a nubbly surface. Both look polished, but the name says nothing about the fiber: some designer tweeds are mostly acrylic or polyester. Read the composition line before the price. Balmain's charcoal six-button jacket is 95% virgin wool, Alexander McQueen's cropped jacket is 96% wool and 4% mohair, and Max Mara's taupe bouclé is pure cashmere. Etro's bordeaux tweed is 64% wool to 36% polyamide, and Isabel Marant's Suna blends wool and alpaca with viscose and polyamide. We want wool or another animal fiber listed first.

The best-known tweed label backed by law is the Orb of Harris Tweed. According to the Harris Tweed Authority, the Harris Tweed Act of 1993 requires the cloth to be produced in the Outer Hebrides, from wool dyed and spun in an island mill, and handwoven at the home of a weaver. At the other end of the scale, Chanel's multicolored wool tweed comes from the Fall-Winter 2026 runway, its listing notes.

An open bouclé lets the wind through, so treat it as a 55-to-60-degree jacket with a fine knit under it. Loops also snag: keep chain-strap bags and prong-set rings away from the fronts and cuffs. A collarless tweed leaves the neck bare, so plan on a turtleneck from late October.

  • Bordeaux tweed jacket, a cream turtleneck, gray flannel trousers and black loafers.
  • Taupe cashmere bouclé over a chocolate knit dress, with chocolate suede boots.
  • Multicolored tweed with a black turtleneck and black straight trousers, so the jacket carries all the color.

Quilted jackets

A quilted jacket is the fall jacket for the 40s and low 50s: a shell, a thin layer of padding, and stitch lines that hold the padding flat. It is lighter and flatter than a puffer, so it sits under a crossbody strap and goes over a blazer on a cold commute. For full puffers and parkas, see the best winter coats.

Start with Burberry's two. The Floriston is glossy nylon cut boxy, with tonal corduroy trims and a check lining; the Fernleigh comes in a vineyard red with the check stitched into the quilting and a leather collar. Prada's chocolate jacket is cropped with a corduroy collar, and its unlined quilted polyamide is the lightest of the group. Miu Miu trims olive quilting in leather, and Loewe's stone-colored quilted barn jacket has a ribbed hem. Moncler's Libellule is the down-filled one: 90% down and 10% feather inside a water-repellent nylon the house calls longue saison.

Check the fill line. Down gives the most warmth for its weight; polyester fill, which most of these use, keeps most of its warmth when damp and dries much faster, as the outdoor maker Rab explains. Then close the jacket over a sweater: the stitch lines should run straight across the chest, not pull into diagonals. Burberry's listing gives the slim Fernleigh's length as 65 cm (25.6 in) in a UK small, so it sits around the hip rather than covering the seat; over chunky knits, the boxier Floriston is the better cut. More in our quilted jackets.

  • Navy diamond-quilted barn jacket, a cream cable knit, gray straight jeans and burgundy loafers.
  • Olive quilted jacket, an ivory turtleneck, chocolate corduroy trousers and brown boots.
  • Chocolate cropped quilted jacket over an ivory knit midi dress, with brown boots.

Bomber jackets

The fall bomber worth buying is cut in wool, suede or a lightly padded knit rather than thin nylon. Victoria Beckham's is charcoal virgin wool with a scarf draped from the collar and a concealed two-way zip. Prada's gray blouson is wool and cashmere, lined in more of the same, with a drawstring hem. Maison Margiela cuts a zip jacket in wool gabardine that its listing calls water-resistant, and Missoni's, from its fall 2026 runway according to the listing, is pieced from low-gauge knit panels in a beige, yellow and pink check and lightly padded. In suede, Valentino Garavani's tobacco caban bomber buttons down the front and The Row's Roana has a two-way zip.

A two-way zip matters more than it looks: open the bottom when you sit, and the jacket does not bunch at your middle. And a wool or knit bomber does the work of a cardigan and a jacket at once: zipped outside on a 58-degree day, open over a shirt at your desk. Browse more bomber jackets.

  • Charcoal wool bomber with its scarf tied, an ivory silk midi skirt and black boots.
  • Tobacco suede bomber, a cream turtleneck, white jeans and brown loafers.
  • Gray wool and cashmere blouson over a gray knit and gray trousers, all one tone.

Shearling-collar jackets

Shearling at the collar puts warmth where the wind gets in, without the weight of a shearling coat, and stretches a jacket into late fall. The most useful come apart. Magda Butrym's cropped leather biker has a removable shearling collar, and Gabriela Hearst's Grant, new for fall 2026, is a leather aviator with a detachable one: wear the jacket bare in October and add the collar in November. Brunello Cucinelli's waxed lambskin aviator pairs a dyed lamb shearling collar with a cashmere rib hem.

Check where the shearling stops. Isabel Marant's Adelina is suede lined in shearling that spills over the collar, so the whole body is warm; most of the others put it only at the collar or cuffs, which warms the neck and wrists but not the torso, so dress the layer underneath for the weather. Givenchy's raw-denim blouson adds padded sleeves to its dyed sheepskin collar, Alaïa's black denim trucker has a shaggier collar, and Valentino Garavani's collarless checked wool twill moves the shearling to the cuffs. For full shearling jackets and real versus faux, see the best shearling coats.

  • Dark denim blouson with its shearling collar, a gray turtleneck, black trousers and black boots.
  • Espresso leather biker with the collar on, a cream knit, ecru jeans and brown boots.
  • Ivory padded blouson, a camel turtleneck and chocolate wide-leg trousers.

The tailored jacket as outerwear

From mid-October into early November in most northern cities, a heavy wool jacket can be your only outer layer if the cloth is dense enough to stop a breeze: felted wool, melton or double broadcloth. Alaïa's blazer is felted wool with peak lapels and a sculpted waist. Dries Van Noten's is melton with three patch pockets, and Max Mara's cropped jacket is hand-sewn pure wool double broadcloth, unlined, with its own wide scarf. Thom Browne's plaid and Victoria Beckham's green Olie are virgin wool; Gabriela Hearst's Angela is a double-breasted wool and silk in cognac.

Size a blazer you will wear outside for a fine knit, not a shirt: button it and sit down, and if the front pulls into creases from the button, it was cut for indoors. Check the pockets too. Etro's check blazer has faux pockets, according to its listing, which is fine at a desk and a nuisance at a bus stop. As an outer layer, a jacket that covers the seat keeps more of you warm. See more blazers.

  • Green wool blazer over a cream turtleneck, gray trousers and burgundy loafers.
  • Cognac double-breasted blazer, an ivory knit, ivory wide trousers and brown boots.
  • Black felted blazer, a gray turtleneck, black straight trousers and black boots.

How to wear a fall jacket with what you already own

In one outfit, Vêtir's stylists keep brown, tan and camel jackets away from navy and blue denim, and black away from brown, and these pairings follow that.

Which fall jacket to buy first, what to keep, and the mistakes we see

Buy for your weather first: suede or leather if your fall is dry, a waxed barn jacket if it rains every week, a dense wool tailored jacket or tweed if you spend your days in an office. The jackets we would keep for a decade are a plain suede or leather jacket in a dark, forgiving color, a waxed barn jacket you rewax each fall, and a wool tweed in a quiet weave. Embellished tweed, logo quilting and bright bombers are one-season pleasures: buy them for the fun.

  • Fitting a jacket over a T-shirt in September, then finding it will not close over a sweater by Halloween.
  • Buying pale suede for a rainy city.
  • Choosing by the name rather than the composition, and ending up with a "tweed" that is mostly polyester.
  • Stretching a quilted jacket into winter. Once morning lows sit below 40°F, it needs a heavy knit under it or a coat over it.

How we chose

We began with what each jacket has to do in fall weather, then read the composition line on every listing. That ruled out tweeds that photographed well but listed acrylic or polyester first, and a cotton and linen jacket its own house describes as spring outerwear. We compared each photograph with its listing for color, length and collar, and spread the picks from a little under $900 to the top of the market. Every pick had at least three sizes when we checked, most four or more; where a jacket we wanted was down to its last two, we took a fuller listing of the same style or an equivalent. Nothing here is pre-owned.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fall jacket for women?

The best jackets for fall are usually two: a suede or leather jacket for dry days and a waxed barn jacket or quilted jacket for wet, colder ones. If you buy only one, choose by your weather: leather for a dry, windy fall, waxed cotton for a wet one.

What jacket should I wear in 50-degree weather?

A quilted, waxed barn, leather or shearling-collar jacket over a sweater, or suede on a dry day. A canvas chore jacket or an open bouclé will feel thin unless the sun is out.

Is a barn jacket waterproof?

Not quite. Waxed cotton is water-resistant: it sheds showers, and Barbour advises reproofing its waxed jackets once a year to keep them that way. A plain cotton canvas barn jacket soaks through in steady rain.

What is the difference between a chore jacket and a shirt jacket?

A chore jacket is a work jacket: boxy, collared, with three or four patch pockets, cut to go over a sweater. A shirt jacket, or overshirt, is cut like a shirt, closer and lighter. In wool or cashmere the two meet in the middle, and either works as an outer layer in fall.

When is it too cold for a fall jacket?

When the morning low settles below 40°F, switch to a coat or wear the jacket over a heavy knit. On our reading of NOAA's 30-year normals, that happens around October 10 in Denver, November 2 in Chicago and November 25 in New York.
