Gifts for Skiers: The Luxury Presents They Won't Buy Themselves, From Lift to Après

The best gifts for skiers are the upgrades they never make for themselves. In our experience, a skier spends on boots, skis, a season pass and a good jacket, then wears the same base layer for years, owns one pair of gloves for every kind of day and walks to après in whatever snow boots were on sale. Give the better version: a Polartec, merino or wool-silk base layer, a second pair of gloves, a balaclava, après boots with a real sole, a duffel for the week or, if you can check the size, the ski jacket itself. Leave skis, ski boots, helmets and goggles to them.

Below: what to leave alone, how to size a gift without asking, ten edits for her and for him, and when to give a present for a trip that starts before Christmas. For the kit itself, see our guide to what to wear skiing; for everyone else, our luxury Christmas gifts hub.

Gifts for skiers: buy around the gear, not the gear

Everything a skier is fitted for is chosen with the body in it: ski boots on the foot, a helmet on the head with the goggles under its brim, skis for a height, a weight and a way of skiing. Even when they have told you the model, they will want to choose the length. So the safest luxury gifts sit around that kit, in the hours between runs: the layer under the jacket, the hands and face on the chairlift, lunch, après and the journey.

Our stylists' test is two questions: will they use it every day of the trip, and would they have bought it themselves? A base layer passes the first and usually fails the second, which is exactly what makes it a good present.

How to learn a ski size without asking

  • Jackets and ski pants: read the label in the pair they ski in now, then check it against the house's own size chart, because the scales differ. On Vêtir, Moncler Grenoble numbers its men's ski jackets from 0, Zegna lists its Cashco jacket in numbers from 36, and Brunello Cucinelli sizes its men's shell in letters and its women's wool ski jacket in US sizes. Our Moncler guide converts the house's numbers.
  • Base layers: buy their exact size. Going up one when unsure works for a sweater and defeats a layer that only does its job pressed to the skin. If you cannot find out, give a vest, which sits over a layer.
  • Gloves and mittens: copy the size from the pair they wear most. Mittens forgive more than gloves, and the roomiest here, Brunello Cucinelli's shearling pair, is cut to slip over a coat sleeve, its listing says.
  • Boots: check the size printed inside their winter boots and the scale it uses. Versace and Tod's list the women's boots below in US sizes, with half sizes.

Luxury gifts for skiers to wear under the jacket

A base layer is worn longer than anything else on a ski day, from the first lift to the drive home, and in our experience it is the piece skiers replace least. Few luxury houses make a true ski base layer, so the good ones make better presents than a second jacket. Look for a technical knit or a fine wool, a close fit and long sleeves.

For her

Moncler Grenoble's Polartec top is the technical choice: its listing calls the fabric Polartec Power Grid base layer, a lightweight knit for warmth and moisture-wicking. Gabriela Hearst's Peppe is a close-fitting wool-silk turtleneck, and Prada's slim turtleneck is 70 percent wool and 30 percent silk. Alaïa makes the set: a fitted merino crewneck and high-rise wool-blend leggings with what the listing calls a second-skin fit, for under ski pants by day and under a knit dress at dinner.

For the middle layer, a down vest warms her core, leaves her arms free and comes off at lunch without leaving her in a base layer. Moncler's Frelon is short and slim in glossy nylon laqué; Prada's belted vest in wool and cashmere, filled with down, looks like tailoring on the terrace.

  • The set to give: Alaïa's merino top with the wool-blend leggings, in her exact size.
  • For the woman who is always cold: the Polartec top and Moncler's Frelon, worn together under her ski jacket.

For him

Moncler Grenoble's men's Polartec top is the same Power Grid knit as hers, designed for comfort on the slopes, its listing says, so a couple who ski together can each unwrap one. Its vest is Polartec High Loft velvet fleece that the house says dries quickly. Gabriela Hearst's Wells crewneck in wool and silk goes under a shell on a mild day, and its August jacket, a teddy of cashmere, alpaca, virgin wool and silk, is the warm layer he will also wear on the plane. Two down vests: Moncler's plain Contrin, with a stand collar, and Brunello Cucinelli's in a waxed techno cotton the listing calls water-resistant, with a detachable shearling collar and down certified to the Responsible Down Standard.

  • For the man who runs hot: the fleece vest, which comes off at lunch and, by the house's account, dries quickly on the back of a chair.
  • For the man who skis one week a year: the Contrin vest, which he will wear in town for the rest of the winter.

Ski gifts for the chairlift: mittens, gloves and balaclavas

In our experience the ski glove is the piece most skiers own exactly one of, and one pair has a bad week: still damp from yesterday at the first lift. A second pair is the gift. Brunello Cucinelli's mountain gloves for him are bonded corduroy with an adjustable strap and an outside zip pocket. For the village and the drive, Moncler's virgin wool gloves carry the house's tricolor band, and Prada's, in Re-Nylon and nappa, are the sleeker pair.

For her on the slope, Brunello Cucinelli's mountain gloves are virgin wool flannel with Thermore padding, a shearling lining and what the listing calls a thin membrane against the elements. Mittens are the gondola-and-village present: the same house's curly shearling pair with leather-bound cuffs, Prada's wool and nappa mittens with a fleece lining and a removable strap, and Max Mara's camel-hair Ombrato pair, sold in paired sizes such as US 6/8. A knit balaclava does the most for the least, closing the gap at the collar in a windy lift line and replacing a scarf on the walk to lunch. The Row's Qythe is cashmere, alpaca and silk, Magda Butrym's is intarsia wool, and Moncler's adds sequins to a virgin-wool jacquard. For him: Moncler Grenoble's fleece balaclava, Saint Laurent's ribbed cashmere hood scarf, a hood and a long scarf in one piece, and Burberry's Tribar trapper hat, wool check trimmed with lamb shearling.

  • For her: The Row's balaclava with Prada's mittens, both black.
  • For him: the corduroy mountain gloves for the slope and Prada's Re-Nylon pair for the drive home, one present for two kinds of day.

More pairs, for town and mountain, are in designer gloves and mittens.

The big ski gift: a jacket or ski pants

A ski jacket is the right gift when three things are true: you can read the size on the jacket they ski in now, that jacket is old enough that they have talked about replacing it, and you know the color they would choose. If any of the three is missing, make the big gift an après piece instead. Every weather claim below is the house's, taken from its listing, not ours.

For him

Zegna's Cashco ski jacket, in the house's cotton-and-cashmere cloth, is the one with a number: its listing reads “Waterproof 4,000 mm” and calls it windproof and water repellent, and our guide to what to wear skiing explains how to read a figure like that. Moncler Grenoble's Servance is down under a denim-effect virgin wool the listing calls water-resistant and breathable, with a powder skirt, water-repellent zips and a ski-pass pocket; the Hers, in a ripstop the house calls windproof and water-repellent, packs into a compact pouch. Brunello Cucinelli's two-tone jacket is a wind- and water-resistant shell with a funnel neck, hood and thumbholes; its matching ski pants hang from braces, with zipped cuffs that open over ski boots. Zegna's Cashco 3 in 1 is cut from the same cotton and cashmere. By our rule of thumb, a jacket described only as water-resistant or water-repellent belongs to cold, dry days; our men's ski outfits show which Moncler Grenoble jackets carry a Gore-Tex laminate. For her

Moncler Grenoble's Valfassa is built for the slope: lightweight down in a quilting the house says was inspired by high peaks, with a powder skirt, wrist gaiters and knit trims its listing ties to traditional alpine dress. The Sandane puts the same powder skirt and wrist gaiters inside a bouclé tweed of wool and mohair, under a long-haired shearling collar. Brunello Cucinelli's belted ski jacket is virgin wool over a down fill, with a detachable hood and belt. Below the waist, Burberry's Edenhall ski pant is a stretch ripstop with zipped hems, and Brunello Cucinelli's virgin wool ski pants close at the ankle with zips and elastic. None of these listings names a waterproof membrane, so by our rule they suit cold, dry days; if she skis where it can rain at the base, our women's ski outfits show the sealed Gore-Tex and Dermizax jackets. Après-ski gifts: boots that grip and knits for the lodge

Après pieces are the easiest big gifts for ski lovers: they never have to survive a fall in powder, and they get worn in town all winter. Start with the boots, since packed snow and wet stone both ask for a rubber sole. Versace's Medusa boots pair shearling and nappa on a rubber sole with a drawstring top; Tod's Gommino lace-ups are suede, lined in shearling, on a rubber sole.

Then the knit she will be seen in once the jacket is off. Thom Browne's Icelandic Fair Isle cardigan is cashmere, with the house's striped grosgrain inside the placket; Dries Van Noten's Tolsey is 86 percent cashmere with a marled yoke; Magda Butrym's jacquard half-zip is pure wool; and Moncler's zip cardigan is an alpaca blend with nylon and wool. Dior's DiorAlps wrap skirt, in the house's Cannage motif, is the piece for dinner: mostly wool, and described in its listing as waterproof.

  • The lodge evening: the black Thom Browne cardigan over the gray Cannage skirt, with the black Versace boots.
  • The terrace: Magda Butrym's half-zip over Gabriela Hearst's brown Peppe turtleneck from the first edit, one tonal layer on another.

For him

Fendi's Terrain Chelsea boots are black calf leather on a notched rubber sole; Brunello Cucinelli's grained deerskin ankle boots are shearling-lined on a lug sole. Thom Browne's Fair Isle cardigan is pure cashmere, Brunello Cucinelli knits a Fair Isle half-zip in a cashmere-and-silk blend and a crewneck in brushed alpaca blend, and Moncler's reversible vest is teddy fleece on one side and quilted nylon on the other, with a down fill. More pairs with grip are in cold-weather boots, and our après-ski outfits guide takes the terrace, the lodge and dinner in turn.

  • The lodge pairing: Fendi's Terrain boots with the Thom Browne cardigan, both black.
  • For the walk back to the hotel: the reversible vest over the half-zip.

Gifts for the ski trip: duffels and a daypack

A ski week fills a bag with more wet, bulky things than most trips: boots, gloves that never quite dry, a damp base layer on the way home. Our stylists' rule for the bag: nubuck and suede for the car and the hotel, canvas, nylon or smooth leather for the skier who carries their own luggage across a slushy parking lot. Saint Laurent's leather duffel has a protective leather base and a two-way zip; Prada's is cotton canvas trimmed in leather, with an adjustable shoulder strap; Zegna and Loewe make theirs in nubuck. For her, Isabel Marant's Tilpa weekender is glossy textured leather, 58 by 28 by 23 cm, carried by hand, on the shoulder or across the body.

Two cleverer ideas. Fendi's duffle folds, rolls up and fastens with buttons, so it travels flat in a suitcase and comes home full of après boots. Prada's medium nylon backpack, 32 cm (about 12½ inches) tall, holds the spare layer, sun cream and a phone on the mountain. What goes in them is in our ski trip packing list; browse more weekend bags.

Small gifts for skiers: stocking stuffers under $500

The best small ski gifts are gear-adjacent, and two come from Moncler Grenoble's collaborations with mountain specialists. The thermal bottle, made with SIGG, is vacuum-insulated stainless steel with a built-in sieve for tea leaves or fruit. The carabiner is a climbing carabiner; its listing says each one is individually tested, with the test date and a number laser-marked on it, and on a ski day it clips gloves or a beanie to a pack strap. The crampons, made with Grivel, have 14 steel points and, the listing says, adapt to a wide range of shoes and keep a step steady on mud or ice: a present for the day off skiing, sized by letter.

Then the things that get forgotten in the packing: Clé de Peau Beauté's broad-spectrum SPF 50+ cream, La Mer's lip balm, and sunglasses for the terrace, such as Celine's black mask frames, which the listing says give 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. For the head, Loewe's wool beanie and Moncler's jacquard headband in bouclé and sequins, which warms the ears without hat hair.

  • A stocking for a skier: the carabiner, the sun cream, the lip balm and the headband.
  • A host gift for the chalet weekend: the thermal bottle, filled before you arrive.

When to give Christmas gifts for skiers, and how to give one that hasn't arrived

For many skiers the season starts well before Christmas. Vail Resorts scheduled Vail Mountain's 2026–27 opening for November 13 and Park City Mountain's for November 20, dates it says may change with weather and conditions. Aspen Snowmass scheduled Aspen Mountain and Snowmass to open on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, and Les 3 Vallées lists December 4 as the start of Courchevel's winter season (our Courchevel guide covers the resort). These are planned dates that move with the snow, so check the resort's own page nearer the trip. If the first trip comes before December 25, give the ski gift early: at Thanksgiving, or on one of the eight nights of Hanukkah, which runs from sundown on Friday, December 4, to nightfall on Saturday, December 12, by Hebcal's calendar. Order early and check the delivery estimate at checkout.

If a piece will not arrive in time, give something small from the same edit now and the larger piece later: the carabiner clipped to a card that names the jacket, or the wool gloves with a picture of the boots folded inside. In our experience a small real thing with a promise attached lands better than an empty box. For a January trip, keep one piece back for the night before they leave. Among the ski requests our AI stylist has received are “Style ski looks for Aspen” and “Pants for après-ski”; ask our AI stylist to build the rest of the ski wardrobe around the piece you give.

How we chose these ski gifts

  • Useful on a mountain, according to the listing: every on-slope piece states something that matters on a ski day, such as Polartec, wool and silk, a powder skirt, wrist gaiters, a waterproof rating, a shearling lining or a rubber lug sole. Where a listing claims no waterproofing, we say so.
  • Nothing a shop has to fit: no skis, snowboards, ski boots, helmets or goggles.
  • Safe to give: where a piece is sized, we preferred the widest size run on offer; the balaclavas, beanies, bags and all but one of the small gifts need no size at all.
  • New to our ski coverage: none of these 65 pieces appears in our ski outfit, après or packing guides, so the edit adds to them.
  • Houses: Moncler Grenoble and Brunello Cucinelli lead because they make the most ski-specific pieces; 21 other houses fill the gaps, from Alaïa's wool leggings to Celine's sunglasses.
  • Price: from stocking stuffers under $500 to ski jackets in the high four figures.

Frequently asked questions

What do you get a skier who has everything?

The better version of what they use daily and never replace: a wool-silk or Polartec base layer, a second pair of gloves, a cashmere or wool balaclava, or après boots with a rubber sole. If they truly own all of it, give the trip rather than the kit: a duffel that folds flat for the journey out, or a thermal bottle for the lift.

Should you buy ski equipment as a gift?

Only when they have told you the exact model and size. Skis, ski boots, helmets and goggles are chosen with the skier in them, so a surprise rarely fits. Clothing, accessories and après pieces are the safer luxury gifts for skiers.

What are good après-ski gifts?

Shearling-lined boots on a rubber sole, a Fair Isle or jacquard knit that works as the top layer indoors, a down vest, a beanie or headband, and sunglasses for the terrace.

What are good ski gifts under $500?

A thermal bottle, a carabiner for the pack strap, traction crampons for an icy trail, a high-SPF sun cream, a lip balm, sunglasses, a wool beanie or a knit headband. Everything in our small-gifts edit costs under $500, and all but the crampons need no size.

What size base layer should I buy as a gift?

Their exact size, read from a base layer or fitted top they already wear. Base layers are cut close because they only work against the skin, so sizing up defeats them. If you cannot find out, give a down vest or a fleece instead.

When should you give a Christmas gift to a skier?

Before the first trip. Several US resorts have scheduled November openings, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass on Thanksgiving Day among them, so for an early-season skier the moment is Thanksgiving or Hanukkah rather than Christmas morning.
